I had a similar problem on my '98 AWD(170k). I thought it was the left front but the bearing had les than 10k so I thought it must be the half shaft. I replaced the left half shaft but still had the problem (klink, klink noise like a broken gear tooth). Turned out to be the short drive shaft at the transfer case end. Domed shaped CV joint. I think it was about $300 for a remanufactured shaft.( I didn't know what to do with it so I had it fixed at DTS.) It's been about a year now and no problems with it.

half shaft cv joint

I bought a reman. half shaft and they only had a $5 core charge for the old one so I kept it. Even though it didn't turn out to be my problem it felt good to have a new one. But that didn't last too long, lol. I started to get a vibration and low rumble noise. I got under the car and I could see that it was throwing all it's grease out of the cv boot. I could not find a hole in the boot either. It was only a few months old and I took it back in it's original box. They didn't give me any trouble and credited back my charge card. Now I'm back driving on the original!....About the work involved, it's a lot of labor and you can save some money. I took the rotor, caliper and caliper mount off. Then the tie rod end and upper ball joint. Then it's possible to push the shaft in and clear of the wheel bearing. (You need some muscle for that). I would suggest you replace the seal before you put the new shaft in. That seal was about the hardest single task for me. Tight quarters. I destroyed it taking it out and putting the new one in is tuff too. If you could find the right diameter pipe to start the new seal, it woukd be easier. Good luck.
