If it ran..it was a miracle and I'll never forget what the ignition switch bezel had printed on it: FAHRT!

hands down I would have to say the 4.2L amc straight six.
those engines while not the biggest on HP. have great torque at 1800 RPM's and are absolutely bullet proof!

I saw an interesting car this summer. It was a Borgward Isabella 2 door coupe. Had the 4 rings Auto Union insignia...a forerunner of the Audi. Made in West Germany from late '50's, early '60's.

Engine a 3 cylinder liquid cooled 2 stroke. Fellow who owned it said it was the same engine as the SAAB of that period.

I used to work for the Delaware Department of Transportation. One day in my Supervisor's office, I saw a book near the telephone. It was printed up by the State and distributed to all State departments. It was the State of Delaware Directory of Administrative State Services. Of course, being a government agency, they were acronym happy, and abbreviated it, so that on the cover, it actually read:

State of Delaware
Directory of A.S.S.

Makes you think that you might find something a little different in that phone book, now doesn't it?

That is hilarious!

Hey, wait a minute....... "ToiLet-a", "TRD", "A.S.S.". I see a common theme forming here!

Well, I've had a couple of 300's, a couple of 351's, a couple of 302's, a Ford 250, a chevy 250, a Pontiac 301, a Ford 2.9L, 3.0L two 2.0L's a Ford 3.8L, a Ford 2.3L and a couple of 4.6"s.

I had great luck with everyone of them but IMHO, the 4.6's are the best bang for the buck in a car or light duty application.

I do miss my 300's, those babies would hammer away all day long and never complain.

We had a 292 in a 64 F100 4X4. Not too good of a motor. Had to tear it down and sleeve it early on when I was a kid.

Then it was a decent motor.

WOW 74 pages thats a brain full there. This may turn into incoherant babbling but hang in there. Im a chevy guy at heart but i know good stuff when i see it.
I think the best I-6 gasser would be as so steadily restated in this thread the 300/4.9 ford. Known so many of my friends that have had them and beat them to oblivion and they held up. example of this would be in 2002 was riding with my buddy brian in his 86 f150 i noticed the oil dummy light flickering and i asked when he topped the oil off last he looked at me and said the last time you did.... when we were getting bonfire wood in 1999. it was 4 qts low for nearly 3 years.
I-6 diesel ill give a nod to the 5.9 cummins damn good clanker but the end all be all Is the LDT-465 Hercules in my duece n a half... sorry it runs on anything remotely burnable
V-6 4300 vortec in my 96 blazer its been beat and beat and beat and at 177xxx miles it walks the 302 in my 1995 f150
small V8s good ones
283 chevy 58-62 blocks literally the last engine you ever need ive got one thats at .125 over bore (302cid) and still sings at 8500 rpms
289 ford just gotta love them seen one carry the front tires of a 62 or 63 falcon thru 2nd
318 mopar they take a hell of a beating 340 mopar nuff said1976-77 360 dodge look up lil red express302 chevy wasnt sure if i should add this as it was a 3 year run but oh well. Revs like stink to 8500 and its 621 peak but not very streetable but puts the 5.0 in my buddys 89 stang to shame. But thats an apples to oranges comparison that was pointed out earlier
327 350 chevy
302 "small block" ford gets decent milage in my truck and runs great
in the small catagory because of displacement not block size351M prolly thinking wtf but ive wrenched on the 79 bronco that it was in and watched that thing swallow more nitrous and rev higher with all stock parts minus the aluminum intake than i would put through a engine that was built for it and was running fine when it was pulled in favor of a 460
Large v-8s poncho 389 and 455 buick 425 and 455 olds 455 grunt enough torque it shoulda been a truck engine Chevy 427 L-88 anyone
460 ford. Only engine build ive ever been in on and against better judgement kept the factory main caps even though we went with a billet crank. Suffice to say i think my next High hp engine will be a 385 series. We didnt get cap walk till 1000 rwhp and that was blowing the tires off on the dyno the operator said it was probably closer to 1200. But what else would you guys expect from a 504 inch ford with blue thunder Bs Vic intake and a PT106 at 8 psi.
bad ones V6 2.8 chevy.. intake ports were too big causing the famous underpowered effect 3.0 dodge mitsubishi in mopar clothingand well ill just say most of the previous posts were pretty dead on its almost 4 am and i have to be at work in 5 hours i need sleep lol

The Ford 460 is one of the top engines on my list...torque, durability, reliability...did I say torque.

Large v-8s poncho 389 and 455 buick 425 and 455 olds 455 grunt enough torque it shoulda been a truck engine the old Buick 322 V8 Nailhead actually was a truck engine used in GMC medium and heavy duties back in the 50's Chevy 427 L-88 anyone

1986 Pontiac Fiero with the 2.4L 4 cylinder..(bought it '88 i think)

WORST engine/car i ever owned.. that POS would not run for more then a couple of weeks without needing dealership visits..

after about 5 months i traded out of it.. got raped in doing so, but i didnt care.. i'll never own a GM product again...

I have to say I am surprised. We had two Buicks with 2.8 v6 engines, and both of them ran well. We had over 250,000 miles on the last one when faulty aftermarket (I did not do it) wiring caused it to catch fire. The 2.8 is definitely worthy of a place on the best engine list.
So far as v6’s go the Ford 4.0 may be the best. We had one in a Ranger that never would die. When we traded that Ranger off it had over 200,000 miles and was still going strong. It never gave us a moments trouble, and it towed better than it had any right to.

Best:
300 I6 Ford
4.0 v6 Ford
4.3 v6 GM
302 v8 Ford
318 v8 MOPAR
2.8 v6 Buick
383 v8 MOPAR

Worst:
305 v8 GM
350 v8 GM
360 v8 MOPAR
2.8 v6 Ford

Are you sure it was a 2.8 Buick and not 3.8? The 3800 (as GM called it) both in NA and supercharged form, was one of the best. The 2.8 GM, if it was the same one used in S-10's and early Jeep Cherokee's, suffered the same fate as the 3.0 Ford "Vulcan". Nice and smooth but no torque to move a small truck or big car very well.

He must mean the 3.8 Buick.
Any 80s S-10 owner will tell you,......That motor could not get out of its own way, real slugs. Even the 2.8 carbed V6 in the Ranger/Bronco II could leave them in the dust.
