I'm probably missing something, but I don't think we have 'modern' names for different vehicles, components, now. Maybe there are...I dunno.

I used to get a kick out of the popular names for cars, car parts...Chevy six...stovebolt.....std. transmission on the steering column...3 on the tree....on the floor...four on the floor..

Numberdummy, my 61 Mercedes-Benz 220Sb had 4 speed column shift, a lot of the old Benzes did. The wierdest one I ever drove was my sister's 64 Alfa-Romeo Guilia TI, it was a european model and had a 5 speed column shift. 1st was where reverse would be on a 3spd. 2nd would be 1st, 3rd would be 2nd, 4th would be 3rd, and 5th was toward the dash, then up inline with 1st and 3rd. Reverse was same plane, but pull out on the lever than down in the 2nd and 4th plane.

All the ID, DS and DS Pallas Citroens had 4 on the tree as well.
The DS Pallas 4 speeds are Citroen-Matic...a 4 speed without a clutch.
The shift lever itself when moved acts as the clutch, this is also the same operation as the M-B's with Hydrac.
The TR-3's, other Triumphs (like the Mayflower) with 3 or 4 on the floor never "Americanized" the gear selector (shift lever).
In other words, it's set up for RHD on a LHD car, so every gear is bassackwards!

I knew about the M-B's because I once owned a 1958 219 with Hydrac.

When I was in High School I worked part time on weekends and two summers at the local Mercedes-Benz/Studebaker/Packard dealer, and some of the M-B trade-ins were wierdo's.
A TR-3 with the bassackwards shift lever, a Triumph Mayflower that had a lever on the outside of the fuel pump which allowed the pump to be manually operated.
I drove this pile to the local DMV once and the fuel pump gave out. The dealer sent a mechanic...we ended up getting the car back with him driving, me laying over the fender pumping that fuel pump lever up and down!
My favorite odd ball pile was a 1957 Wartburg, a POS made in East Germany.
If it ran..it was a miracle and I'll never forget what the ignition switch bezel had printed on it: FAHRT!
