97 F350 Tranny questions.

while hauling a skid steer loader, my 1997 F350 super crew turbo diesel, seems to have alot of trouble. I know a one ton diesel should pull it without any problems. would that mean my tranny is in need of replacement? i bought the truck used and the best i figure it has over 300K miles on it. any ideas?

do you haul other things with it without problems? if you give a little more info to go off of i think some more people will chime in and help you out.

i hauled my 14' landscape trailer and it struggles with it too. just driving around town empty,( witout a trailer) it runs 65 mph at 2500 rpms . i pulled the loaded trailer uphill in first gear, almost didnt make it. It shift gears hard at times, which i was told that the F350 do that normally, shifting is nicer with a loaded trailer, but struggles on small hills and on takeoff.

You've got a e4od fords used the same trans for 250-350 for about the last 20 years and when the e4od starts to shift harder its getting later in its life and honestly at 300k miles its definitely getting late in its life. On average the e4od probably goes 150-200k miles before it goes and the shift more like a car trans than a truck unless you have a shift kit

that being said if its in first gear and holding an rpm (as in not slipping and letting the rpm run up without moving the truck and getting into the right gear) then its probably not the transmission thats your problem.
