I have a 1966 F100 with the three speed manual and have come across a donor 1985 F150 with an automatic overdrive. Will that transmission work in the 66 with a 300 inline six? Do the 85 model trucks have electronically controlled transmissions or are they mechanically controlled? Would I have to alter the transmission mounting brackets in the truck if I used that transmission?

 

The AOD will be either rod or cable controlled depending on if it is a V8 or a I6.

The V8 will be cable operated for the TV as the engine is fuel injected.

The I6 may be cable or rod as the 85 I6 still has a carburetor.

You can reuse the existing transmission mount with a new insulator for the AOD as they mount the same way. It will need to be moved back and new holes re drilled in the frame. You need to use the yolk from the AOD and custom up a u joint with big and small cups.

AODs are very sensitive to pressures and must be set dead nuts on with special tools and gauges. The penalty for not doing it right is a really quickly fried AOD.

Your best AOD donor is an '88-'93 V8 car or truck.

Early units were troublesome.
