Sure, I understand the question.

If you have an individual wire running up from the fuse block to power each instrument, then no you don't need another one that in your harness/kit is designated to power the instruments.

In the original set up, power to the instruments (as well as the radio, electric wipers and heater, if installed) was supplied from the "ACC" post on the ignition switch. This was called "Switched Power" because it was on only when the Ignition Switch was turned on.

The rest of the power was distributed off two sugar cubed size circuit breakers mounted to the instrument panel case. This power was "Hot" as it was on all the time. The circuit breakers connected the generator to the battery (allowing the battery to charge), the "BATT" terminal of the ignitions switch (providing power to the accessories and ignition when turned on), and the lights.

In your case you have extra wires to feed the gauges and do not need the other wire. I'd keep it, cap and bundle it up in case you decide to add something later.

Your sending unit for each gauge is grounded and completes the circuit. It varies the voltage that goes through it - thus the instrument reading.

PS Are you absolutely certain the three wires coming up to the gauges from the fuse block aren't the ones that are supposed to go from the gauge out to the sending units?

Took the wire bundles apart as mfg.suggested,(ie. front, rear, interior) so yes i feel i have the correct ones.Since i have numerous other unused wires,i will add the power wire to them.Julie, your a great help to this site.Thank You much.Joe
