Difference between Ford Service Manual & Workshop Manual

Hi & Thank you in advance.

looking to purchase an OEM repair manual for my 2006 F150/Mark LT- looked at Helm's site and they list 2 different manuals, the Service manual & Workshop manual. The general descriptions appear to be the same with the exception that the Workshop manual has more pictures & illustrations. I would appreciate your thoughts for the "backyard mechanic".

Thanks,

Jeff

It has everything I will ever need to know about my truck.

Ford OEM Repair Manual DVD - runs about $10-25 depending on year/seller
this is the actual manual that the Ford Technician uses to diagnose and repair your vehicle

Ford "Workshop" Manual - runs anywhere from $1-10 typically and is e-mailed to you
this can be 2 things

1. a temporary subscription to an online repository that you can get the info you need.

or

2. an illegil copy of the actual Ford DVD...but it has been trimmed. there is missing data, and it only covers certain years/models

an actual Ford DVD will cover ALL FORDS/Lincoln/Mercury from that year model that is printed on the DVD. They are issued every quarter roughly, and "expire" after 3 months. You can reset your PC clock to the date on the DVD however and that DVD will work perfectly fine.

don't cheap out. spend the extra $5-10 and get the real DVD. They are amazing. I have/had 3 of them. You wouldn't believe the amount of info they contain.

A moderator on Flatratetech advised me that ...

1. As a MSE, the only manuals he has ever seen in a dealship environment are the "OEM Workshop Manuals"- they are a 2 volume series as compared to the Service/repair manual which is a single volume.

the printed manuals are digitalized and that is what you find on the Ford DVD. so I guess it really falls to whether you want paper or PC.

I bought all 3 of my DVD's from a Dealership Service Manager. Each time he gets the latest revision, he posts the old copies up on eBay for sale.

I could have picked up those paper copies, but the cheapest I've found so far was about $75 on Amazon.com and that is alot of dough when I can pay 1/5 the money and print as needed.

BTW, it becomes 2 manuals when you add in all the wiring and vacuum/hose. Without those, it's just a single manual about 3" thick. Your money, but I suggest the DVD. Same thing, different approach

Since I'm not a real mechanic and I stumble through many repairs, successfully I might add, I like to approach the job with both resources available to me.

that is them shotgunz...although $69 a pop is crap.

btw, each time you come across a spot where in the paper manual you'd have to flip a page, or go searching...the DVD hyperlinks to each area.

here are a few screenshots from my 2005/06, 2008 and 2009/10 DVD.

I tried the link and it is no longer any good. What are the best to look for, there's so many different ones and ebay bombards you with a lot of fakes.
