Headliner

I pulled the headliner out of the truck. It was the original and was all flakey and just needs to be replaced. I have been looking on the internet and some of these headliner cost as much as $250, CRAZY. The metal trim pieces that hold the headliner up are in good shape just need to be cleaned up and maybe painted. My question is this, What would be wrong with just using a piece of $8 masonite/hardboard from the local hardware store and covering it with my choice of fabric? Does anyone see an issue with this? Anybody had any problems with a "Do-it-yourself" headliner?

The one in mine was a little flaky but still solid so I had a local upholstry shop take it and after determining it was solid enough to glue the fabric to, they covered it in modern headliner material for $50.

Right on. A little foam pad and some vinyl works well. You could do it yourself with a can of spray adhesive. On mine I have vinyl with two rows of pleated fabric that match my seat.

Funny, I had mine out and cleaned it up and polished the trim. The trim was a fuzzy green color, and cleaned up like new. I was just wondering what sort of elements was the headliners exposed to that is making them crumple? Mine was sturdy as if it had been put in new the week before.

My truck was a farm truck from 1978 to 2008, so it wasn't pampered, and I am willing to bet it is original.

Here is my original headliner. My gramps kept the truck covered with a painters tarp for 22 years unless he was driving it. I would take it to a shop and see what it would cost to cover in a nice vinyl. Shouldn't be much.

That does look nice, I also see your cargo light switch! I was asking a few weeks ago for people to post pictures so I could see where the original location is, I really didn't get much of a response. I though the cargo lights were more common till I started asking.

Mines in good condition, not as fancy as the others whom posted pics, but I'm thinking of having black perforated leather or vinyl stretched over it.

I am not sure but any upholstery guy worth his weight could fabricate the diamond pieces, cover them, then attach them to the headliner. It's a simple design with just some stitching around the exterior edges. I can take better pics if you want to take it and see if it can be made.

As for the Cargo Switch. Someone asked if it turns on just the bed light or the bed light and all interior lights. On mine it turns on everything. I wish it didn't because with the glare inside, it's harder to see out the window into the bed.

I know, wouldn't it be a different look?
If done right, it will last a bit.

Wow is right! From the pics you could have that made for I would guess less than $200.
