I had to read all theway to the bottom before I saw what I expected from the start. I have seen the same problem in many engines here in Bakersfield, CA - hot, dry, and dusty. Your pics ar the reason I HATE Pennzoil. I've used Valvoline my whole life and have never had one of my engines look like that even going 5 - 7K betwen oil change when I was real tight on cash. I like Valvoline but I know a lot of peole that swear by Castrol. I also have a real concern with "quick" oil changes. I personally pull the drain plug and go do something else for 20 - 30 minutes because it seems that the last bit of oil dripping out is the dirtiest. And the oil change chains seem to use the cheaest POS filters on the market. In the future I'd say since you were able to repair this yourself an oil change should b a snap. Oil is your engines blood, don't trust the life of that expensive of a component to unknown brand/weight of oil and filter. Everything I own has Valvoline and a Fram tough guard filter. I try to change it every 3K but don't alaways. I usually get 300K - 500K from my F150's and drive 'em pretty hard.

WOW- please read my posting dated 6/21/10 "2004 F-150 5.4L Triton Problems-HELP!" It looks like my dealer is consistent with your dealer. Unfortunately, after the $2,300 service, my motor is frozen. They claim the valve keeper came off and too much damage to the cylinder, piston and valves to fix. Their $2,300 worth of work had nothing to do with this new damage and I need a new engine!

actually the POS filters I was referring to are the no name brand knock offs that these quick oil change places buy for $100 a pallet. Fram, Purolator (who makes the Motorcraft filters for Ford by the way), Wix and several others are all good filters. Just don't try to save a dollar or two where your engine depends on it.

Didn't find out why they leaked, they wern't lose. Didn't care to take the time to diagnose. They seemed to be some sort of "universal type filter". It had many brnds of vehicles printed on the outside of it. Dodge and chevy included. Gawd.
I use Fram or Motorcraft, with either Valvoline, or Castrol
I'm flipping them the bird as we speak.

wow, i just got back to reading through the forum. Thought I would post pics of my engine when it was replaced due to valve keeper giving out. It's not often you get a chance to look inside.
My engine had about 115k-120k miles on it. I was impressed at how clean it looked.

I change my own oil using Motorcraft oil and filter. Usually around every 5k miles give or take.
I had made a 200 mile trip, noticed it was ticking louder than normal when I stopped, but the noise went down a bit after I let it sit for an hour (meeting with client). I drove back home, took it to the dealer that next morning. Shop mech said it sounded like the cam phasers or similar, I ask my rep to gimmie a quote and I'll bring it back. I also asked if I could take it on another long trip (dove season opened) but the mech said he wouldn't go too far. Well, it kinda siezed up right after I left and about 20 miles away on my way to the office.
I have been known to rev high and hard. I was kicking myself just the other day because I set my speed limiter to 100mph.

Tommy what do you suggest i'm going exactly thru the same thing you went thru. Dealership wanted to for me to buy new motor because i had sludge. I bought that truck used from them with 32k miles i have always changed the oil every 3000 or 4000 miles on it. I was just under powertrain warranty but it didn't cover it cause of the sludge. After reading this forum i'm going to actully changed the vct solenoid 1st than changing the Cam phaser and cam sensor if it still doesn't work ill do the cam phaser then. It is a known issue Ford really should look into actually fixing the problem 1st than saying i need a new engine!

Brand new here... Im following this thread because I have the same problem with my 2006 5.4 f-150. Got it from a dealer last May, they do the oil changes for life... recently started running rough at idle after warm (20 miles or so) and would stall at lights. Only 30k miles. Code said it was the cam position sensor. My mechanic found the sludge, said it wa throwing the sensor off. He flushed the engine, put in new oil and 3 days later the problem is back..so now Im gathering in preparation for a trip to the dealer.. will keep you posted. thanks

Well if you took it to dealership make sure you have all your paperwork to state that you did it there. They might erase stuff from computer hopefully not but you never know on the dealerships. Just also to let you know if you were the 2nd owner or 3rd the warranty powertrain won't cover it since you weren't the 1st owner just FYI. Good Luck! I'm curious of what they will tell you.
