I turn the ignition switch to start--and nothing! all accessories and everything works fine. figured it may be the starter, so i replaced it, and same symptoms. Checked the fuses under the dash, and also checked the ignition relay, and everything looks good. any suggestions?

 

How are your batteries?

 

batteries seem to be fine. all accessories work fine, and the terminals are clear of any corrosion. i had the alternator replaced 2 months ago.

 

Do you hear the fuel pump running when you cycle the key? After evaluating the batteries, you might want to check the secondary fuel filter to see if fuel is getting to it. I would then check FICM for the required voltage.

 

When my batteries went out I had power to all accesories. There just wasnt enough to turn the truck over.

 

yes, i can hear the fuel pump running. the vehicle doesn't even turn-over, so it is not like it is starving for fuel. as i turn the key from accessory to start, nothing happens. it also seems that the key is not going all the way forward. i looked in the Haynes manual, but the electrical diagrams only cover up to 2002, even though it is for 99-06 models (stupid)!

 

Did you try starting with the shifter in neutral?

 

yes, i was thinking the same thing as far as the transmission position sensor being bad, but that didn't work either. i am going to do a voltage check on the batteries again just to be sure they have enough voltage.

 

well, the batteries are both reading 12.4 volts, so i know i have power.

 

Need to put a load on batteries to check them correctly just reading voltage doesn't tell you a lot. I take mine to Wal Mart where I buy them but most auto parts will check them for you.

 

well, i called the stealership to get their opinion. they had me cycle the key from on to off 8-10 times to reset the computer, and i'll be damned if it didn't turn right over! never heard of this before.

 

Why refer to them as a "stealership" when they helped out over the phone at no charge? I'd say they did you right.

 

If they helped me get my vehicle running free of charge, I would personally deliver a pizza and soda at lunch time to who ever I spoke to.

 

ok, they helped me out, so they aren't that bad this time, but the did charge me $600 2 months ago to replace my alternator

 

My experience is that a bad alternator is often followed quickly by a bad battery (or two). If that is your case, you can throw in an expensive FICM later unless you check it out thoroughly now. A voltage test is useless. Do the load test on each individual battery. I do it at least twice a year now as preventative maintenance - and I have new batteries. I also recommend considering the installation of a fuel pressure gauge - it is a great tool to use in troubleshooting, but more importantly - making sure you don't let the fuel pressure get below 45 psig will possibly save you a big injector bill.
