If I remember right, there's a VIN number somewhere on the block, but I can't remember where. As a starter, you could find part numbers on main engine parts, such as the head, intake/exhaust manifolds. The first two numbers will be the year. D = 70s, E = 80s, F = 90s. Second number is the year. (ie. E1 = '81)
It won't be super accurate, because they can always put 79 parts on an 81 if they're on the shelf, but it'll get you into the ballpark of the engine's year, at least until you find the VIN.
Very cool on a 300 in a 79 Bronco. That's a fun custom job.

nice year! Welcome to the FTE!
There's some helpful folks on here, & much more knowledgable than me. I got alot of pointers and saved work and money here. Hope you enjoy.
I would say look beside the down draft tube on your exhaust. That's cuz mine is there. On the passenger's side, middle of the block top to bottom/left to right. Should B letter, number, letter, letter. Mine is C 8 D E. The first signifies decade - yours should B "D" for seventies. Next is yr of that decade "8", so we have a 1968 in my case (yours D8 I'd guess).
I had to scrape away grease n oil/dirt to find mine. Found that some 1 put the right displacement motor, but from a 2 yr older car. Answers alot of other Qs in my case.
Stick around some 1 more knowledgable will ck in shortly...

The block/head casting numbers do not mean the year of the engine, per se. The casting numbers didn't change every year, just when the molds were updated. This was typically only done when there was a revision in the design, or the molds wore out from use.
It's totally possible to find casting numbers on a block that are 8-10 years older than the chassis, even though the engine is original. If the engine didn't go thru a major revision, and the mold was still in good shape, why toss it out?

I have a 1964 Mobile Canteen from a New Jersey Fire Department that has all of it's original body paint , some of the lettering and a brand new kitchen inside. Really well maintained. The chassis came from Ford and the body came from Boyertown Body.
The problem is I can only find 1 vin on the top of the right front rail, behind the axle. People at Ford can't figure this one out and I thought you might have some idea of what I have here or even an idea of where another vin would be. The vin is p40JL540209. It looks as though most of the engine is original equipment (7,000 miles) I have new exhaust and now a new water pump in the year that I have owned it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
