how to raise a rev limiter?

Does any one know how I can get the rev limiter raised or eliminated on my '97 EFI 460. I do some truck pulls and could use a few hundred more rpm's so i can get down the track a little faster.

get an chip burned for it or go get a ignition box from msd or accel or someone like that where u can set it

where does the rev limiter kick in now?

because if ur motor is stock i wouldnt recommend revving it harder than 7-7.5

it cuts out at only 4500. I don't think a aftermarket rev limiter will do any thing. I could be wrong but i believe it is a fuel shut off in the ECU. I dont know where i can get a custom tune for it. The few places in my area don't want to or know how to do anything other than mass air mustangs.

maybe someone here had used the complete ignition system from msd... with the efi controller...

i can do it with carbed engines but never tried it with efi...

I was thinking about a quarter horse but I don't think the binery editor software works with the 460 ecu. I could be wrong but i think i would have to convert to a mustang ecu to use the Quarterhorse.

There is no rev limiter at 4500rpm so if your motor is dying it's because of loss of fuel pressure or a weak ignition system. The usable rpm range on an all stock motor is about 5500rpm.. above that the valve springs will allow valve float. FWIW I believe the stock ignition rev limit is around 6000rpm.

This is true for the small blocks but not the 460. I know another guy that has one it cuts out at 4500 too.

Quarterhorse will "work" with the ECU. It's just that to do anything useful, you need to know the binary addresses of the data you want changed, all put into a "def" file.

Do you know what the catch code of your ECU is? That's the 3 letters and one digit code on the ECU in a font 3 times larger than the rest of the numbers. It may also be on the door jamb. That's the code that you need to find out if there is a def file for your ECU. Less important is whether it's an EEC-IV or EEC-V.

The code on the ecu is HHX0. (there is a sticker on the hood near the hinge with the code also).

Fuel cuts completely at 4800rpm, restored when rpm drops below 4300. There's a possibility of a def file coming out for HHX0.

what if I direct wired the fuel pump? maybe put a switch in the cab that i can turn on just when i'm pulling. would the engine run safely to about 5000 rpm?
or is does it just shut the injectors off?
hitting that limiter is hard on stuff when i'm pulling. that big RPM drop then back to full power makes quite a jerk, and the loss of momentum really hurts how far I make it down the track.

It's the injectors that get shut off at 4800.

I really couldn't say how safe it is to run to 5000. Most of the fuel and spark calibration is set up for a range up to 4400, so if the engine suddenly needs more fuel or less spark after 4400, it isn't going to get it.

Ford intended as a complete shut off. Some cars have softer "half fuel" cutoffs before the hard one, but not the 460s.
