good deal on a 7.3?
so i found a guy who needs to get rid of a 7.3 motor fast. i can probably get it for under $1000.
this is what i know about it. it's out of a higher mileage 2001 f350. It was coded and verified that is has the forged connecting rods (pulled oil pan to look). he says it's missing the oil pressure sensor and a cps sensor and that's it. he also said the inside of the cylinder walls looked good with no scoring or anything.
so, should i buy it? what do i need to check on the motor? compression test? im still new to mechanic work and not sure how to do one of these?
i'm thinking of having it for a backup motor or if i can turn it around and make some money off of it, id be willing to part with it too.
how much could i expect to get from something like this? i know these motors are expensive and it seems like a good price.
he also has a van turbo he said he would sell me for $100. whats your guys opinion on the van turbo?

You should have a 12k winch or larger. Unless you only plan to pull your truck on good ground.
An 8k winch is about good for a jeep with a mild lift and tires.
If you use it for utility on your truck then sure, but to pull yourself out of the mud when stuck, even with a snatchblock, it will strain on the second wrap (unless your barely stuck, which I am never)

Well, after thinking it over, I'm gonna play it safe on this one. I really don't know enough about it to be comfortable buying it. I actually see them for sale quite often in these parts.
The "van turbo" turned out to be a 94-97 turbo.
Here is the link to the craigslist posting if anyone else is interested.
7.3 Diesel Engine - Ford Powerstroke (forged rods)
He's getting desperate to sell it, so you could probably get an awesome deal on it.
Thanks for all the info guys.
