92 4x4 doesnt like 0/D

whats the deal? at about 75 on the highway on any hill it seems like o/d is gutless. its an AOD and a 5.0 with 3.55's 31" tires. is that just a 5.0? they dont like below 2000 rpm? its just annoying when it downshifts.

also seems to get about 10mpg haha. but it was just tuned up. i checked the timing, smells a little rich. fuel pressure is right. could it be the platinum plugs i put in it? or injectors? doesnt run bad other then the downshifting and the 10mpg tho. no check engine light

any ideas guys?

Hey, I had the same problem, but I also had the problem of driving and then all of a sudden giving it some gass to pass someone...and I wouldn't go anywhere. I fixed it by replacing the TPS sensor which is under the throttle body. I was driving on the freeway and I had OD off...I hit the OD button and as soon as it shifted, I just started slowing down...flooring it..didn't matter. Replaced that sensor and all is well, it's like driving a new truck. I found my TPS sensor at the junk yard for a real cheap fix. Took about 10 minutes to do the swap on my truck.

Hope it helps

3.55's are not enough for a 5.0 in the bigger trucks it's as simple as that(I really miss my 5.8) , the 5.0 needs 4.10 minimum for anything bigger than a 2wd regular cab.

nah, it just needs to be pushed off a cliff.

On a more serious note, I have a 91 4x4 302 with 4.10's and 33's at 55-60 mph in OD it is a gutless turd..often downshifting just to keep speed and it is truly annoying! I usually just turn OD off and run in 3rd. On the other hand, at 65-75mph in OD it has decent power. These damn 302's just need to get above 2000rpm to start making power. IIRC the peak torque rating on the 91 302 is at 3800rpm.

i guess its just being a 302 then ive noticed if i run 80 or 85 it holds speed alot better but then again its then around 2200 at 80.

i have a spare tps sensor but i used a multi tester on mine an it checked out and i set it while i was in there.

what about the surging idle at times? bad coil? the plugs have like 1000 miles on them and new wires aswell. or is that jsut part of the speed density crap? ive cleaned the throttle body and map sensor as well as a new o2 sensor when i tuned it up.

eventually after i get out of college an start my new job i'd like to put a procharger or a paxton on it just for the cool factor and a little boost in power. i love this truck, the motor is out of a 95 explorer its an h.0 with the 5.8 firing order. but has the truck intake and electronics on it.

If its any consolation, a friend has a 93 1500 Chev. 4x4 700r4 with the 305 and 32 in tires. It cannot get out of its own way, a real gutless turd in OD.......... the Chev. equivalent of your truck.

No that's not a real HO, that's the same 5.0 motor that appeared in all "94+ trucks except that it has GT40 heads on it. All truck motors after '94 use the HO firing order BTW.
