Fuel Filter???
Tried to search, got nothin...
1960, 223 6
Is there a fuel filter in the bottom of the fuel pumps in these trucks? I have an in-line filter after the pump but also I think there might be a filter in the "bowl" in the original fuel pump... Don't have my shop manual yet but will be getting one...
just wanna get all the filters and easy stuff changed out...
I have the filter with a gasket in hand and the only place I can see it fitting is there... this is the original fuel pump
I loosened the single screw in the bottom of the pump only to get gas in my armpit and let it drain for a min, it was still flowin strong after a good min so I tightened it back up, Siphon effect?
Any help would be appreciated, and yes I feel like a putz asking questions about such a simple task Haha but hey, the info's here somewhere and I'd rather not waste the fuel to find there's nothin in there

Yeah out of all the fuel pumps and filters I've seen for this 'ol truck I haven't come across either of these in my searches for the answer to this one... I wanna just take it apart and look but sooo much fuel is wasted, I'm thinkin about just clampin the rubber lines and goin for it but like I said I'd rather not do it if there's nothing in there... I loosend the bottom single screw and it was Niagra falls for a good minute...
From the looks of it, it looks like it would slip right in there, I guess there's two ways to find out...
Take it apart and get soaked in gas again and possibly replace a filter
Or a member has this setup or has run into it before
If it were Summer, I would've already figured it out... It's cold out there Haha

Ok, So this is an Airtex fuel pump part# 4896 which has the vacuum wipers... Which was made for the 2.4L and 2.8L 6cyl...
Now if I were to buy the correct pump from Airtex it would be part# 4708 which was made for the 3.7L 6... Which looks exactly the same as the # 4896... I'm tryin to get a hold of thier tech support to find the differences
I'm also lookin for an original part # to cross referance with, Where's that retired Ford parts manager???

There were two different fuel filters that fit into the glass bowl on the 223's fuel pump.
The original (215/223) fuel filter (1952/62) was ceramic. All you had to do was remove it and clean it, then stick the puppy back in.
Ford obsoleted the ceramic fuel filter in 1963, replaced it with a corrogated paper filter (Post #4, the one in your hand). C3TZ9365A (Motorcraft FG16).
Ford also replaced the see-thru glass bowl with a steel bowl that you need X-ray vision to see thru.
This same filter was also used in 292 fuel pumps.
Post #2: Corrogated paper filter: C4AZ9365B (Motorcraft FG1A) / Fits: 1964/77 fuel pumps. Fits into a can that threads onto the fuel pump.
NOTE: Some autoparts store replacement fuel pumps do not have a can or bowl for a fuel filter on them.
If your car/truck has one of these, you have to install an in-line fuel filter, instead.
Lookin' at the pics of your fuel pump, it's an autoparts store replacement. There is no fuel filter used in this pump.
When the 215/223/292 fuel pump's have a filter inside the glass (or steel) bowl, there's a bail with a wing style nut attached to the fuel pump.
Unscrew that nut (by hand), the bowl can then be removed. Your fuel pump has no bail, no nut, no bowl.
btw: What the heck is all this liters jazz? Ford didn't use a liter (L) designation for engines until 1980 in Canada and the US of A.
Using liters instead of the usual 223/292 and etc for the engines used in these old rolling pile of miseries...is confusing!
For example, the 2.8L (171 cid) is the German (Cologne) V6 engine used in 1971 thru 1985 cars/trucks. I surmise that a 3.7L is a 223.
What Ford truck of this vintage had a 145 cid (2.4L) or 171 cid (2.8L) engine? AFAIK, none...except mebbe across the pond.

Bill your brain is a useful plethora of information!! Thank you for poppin in!
So it looks like I cant use the filter that's in my hand Haha, I figured out that this isn't an OE replacement fuel pump after I googled the #'s off it...
On the Airtex products site they have a table for thier fuel pumps and it states that the following fords can use the pump I have (#4896) for a "2.8" or a "2.4" 6cyl
Bronco 66-69
Falcon 60-62
Ranchero 60-62
Mercury, Villager and Comet 60-62
And the other one they offer that I'm supossed to have, that looks exactly the same, #4708 for the 223ci 6 "3.7" for many Vehicles from 55-61
I'm trying to figure out if this is a problem or one waiting to happen and will be calling thier Tech line tomorrow for the specs psi differences etc...
Do you have an original fuel pump #? (vacuum wipers)
I'd rather have that in there... the only ones I can find are for the 8's

If so...
B9A9350B (replaced B8A9350F) .. Fuel & Vacuum Pump Assy / Obsolete
BOB ALLEN FORD in Overland Park KS has ONE = 800-676-0675.
Be aware that this dealer wants Mega Bucks for obsolete parts!
Make sure this fuel pump has the filter. Parts catalog sez it does, but one can never be sure.
No other Ford Dealer, no obsolete parts vendor has any.
