TW chip quit working again!!

Dad bought the truck and it had one of those golden superchips in it. Well that wasn't good enough and bought a Tony Wildman 4 position chip from someone on here.It was good for about 4 months and then realized it had quit working.

Popped it out and cleaned contacts, sprayed with contact cleaner and voila, a working chip again and i'm a happy camper. Well just got in from doing the exact same procedure again and am wondering what is causing this.

If i have to clean it again is there something else to ensure lasting contact?

Thanks for looking
Brooks

Do you have it taped in the PCM?

Yes it was taped and didn't seem like it had worked itself out at all, kind of a bear to pull out actually. Don't know why it loses contact after a while is all. Contacts look nice and clean but i clean them a little anyway.

Tape can hold static electricity unless you used electrical tape. (didn't look at pictures)

Almost sounds like the contacts were not cleaned right on the PCM.

Oh, the pictures are emoticons.

Some contact grease might help (not dielectricgrease) but you shouldn't need it.
To clean the PCM properly, you have to take it out of the truck, but if you scrape or clean to hard, you can pull off the gold on the contacts, then you have to go get a new PCM.
Thats why with a lot of the contact kits they send you that little scrubby, you shouldn't really need more then that.

I shoulda took pictures of mine when I had it out, but was to excited to put the chip in and get that PCM back in.

Nice seeing you in here Chris.

I think you might be on to something with the gold on the contacts. Like I said it had a chip in it when we bought it and when we pulled it out the contacts looked more silver than gold. Put the new chip in and it worked so didn't think anymore of it. Guess the PO scrubbed a little to much and now I would need a new PCM to solve my problem.

When your missing the gold, you'll know it.
They should look silverish when they are polished.
They use gold in there because gold is an excellent conductor, and doesn't corrode easily.
Copper is too, but corrodes.

I would try using some electrical grease first.
Remember, NOT dielectric grease.

I'd try that before I considered the PCM bad.

Thanks Talyn and Action, had batts disconnected so no worries there. If it acts up again I might try some kind of conductive grease. Just think it shouldn't need it.

Electric tape does not hold worth a damn... I had to redo mine the after I got rid of my banks crap because all I had was electrical tape, and it was good 3M tape not some crappy convinience store crap. I have found that gorrilla tape is the best tape for the job, it took me about 15 minutes to get the tape off a few weeks ago when I took my chip out. When I get the F6 it will be help in place with gorrilla tape for sure.

If your eyes are good and you have a steady hand, you can try re-tinning the contacts with some silver solder and a soldering iron. I would try that before I dumped the money on a new computer.
