1996 f150 and gt40p heads

i have a 1996 f150 302 auto that is all stock. i was wondering if it would be worth it to put gt40p heads on it and if so what all would i need to get to do the swap. i know they take special headers but would i need different push rods or anything

The gt40 heads do not need special headers. The Gt-40P heads need special headers or special spark plug wires.

I would look for GT40 heads instead of the GT40P since you will have manifold/header fitment issues.

I would say definitely yes. The E7 heads are quite restrictive, and the GT40/GT40P heads are a great way to help improve power (plus the truck looks stock, making it a good "sleeper" mod), It's definitely worth it, if you don't mind the very limited choice of manifolds/headers that the GT40P allows. I would say this is a great thing to do to your truck. It's high on my list of things to do. (following new gearing and exhaust)

This might help clear up the GT40P header choices: GT40P heads AND GT40P HEADERS that WORK

I am running the cheapie pacesetter/summit headers on my 351w with Gt40P heads. Passenger side fit great, driver side required a small bit of clearanceing by hammer so that the #7 plug wire did not touch the tube. I am running Taylor 90 degree wires. I have not tried to change the plugs in the truck yet, I am sure it is going to suck big time, but for 300 dollars the power gains are well worth it.

I am running gt40 heads on my stock 302. I would suggest shorty headers. I am running heddman long tube headers and they can be a pain to work with. Like the starter, tranny pan ect. IMO you wont see the difference in short vs. long with only gt40 heads as a mod. When you install them, dont use Felpro's front and rear seal for the lower manifold. Use ultra black RTV and be generous!

10 is stock. some guys have gone up to 14 and claimed it was ok. I wouldn't go more than 12 myself.

GT40 heads are identified by 3 vertical bars on the front face of the head and the letters "GT" cast into the head at the corner. The P version has 4 vertical bars and "GTP" cast into the head. Mid year '96 was the cut over from GT to the P heads apparnetly.
