Speed Sensor Pictures. I need some help guys!!

Hello,

Here is a picture of the speed sensor that Kragen Auto Parts gave me when I went to buy a speed sensor for my 1997 Ford Expedition 5.4L 4x4. i wanted to post a picture to make sure that this is in fact, a speed sensor ( I feel retarded asking that.) I DONT KNOW WHERE TO INSTALL THIS THING!?! lol. Can anyone verify that this is the speed sensor and WHERE does it install? Is it ON the transmission?

A picture of where would help, but not necissary. Please help!

Try looking on the top of your transmission. I believe it is located more on the drivers side.

IIRC, the transfer case is twards the back of the truck right behind the tranny, am I correct, or thinking wrong? It's been awhile since I've been under there now!

most are but my info says it is on the transfer case. the vss pictured is defintly not a rear end mounted sensor. if there is none like pictured on transfer case then they may of sold you the wrong vss. and you in fact have a vss on the rear end

My ABS sensor is mounted on the top of my rear differential, it looks similar to the VSS, maybe that is what you were thinking about??

kyle, you've got the right piece. i've got the same truck and i replaced the speed sensor too. it's on the transfer case, which is middle-front on the underbelly of the truck. the sensor is located at the rear end of the transfer case on the driver's side of the cone at that end. if it weren't raining like mad out right now i'd take a pic.

you should be able to find it by site. you'll have to feel around for the bolt (you can't see that part from underneath), take out the bolt and than pull the sensor out of its wiring.

there are supposed to be two of them but i could only find one (and replacing it didn't fix my flashing A4wd problem). if you find the second one let me know (i've heard the second one is behind the shift motor - but there appears to be no room behind what looks to me to be the shift motor (though i ain't totally sure what i'm thinking is the shift motor is actually the shift motor)) - good luck

AMM888, the other speed sensor is in fact behind the shift motor. It is on the rear of the transfer case and looks just like an electric motor would look. It is round like a beer can only a bit smaller. The sensor is actually up above the motor but behind it also. The motor drops out with 3 bolts and is pretty simple. The speed sensors in the picture do appear to be the correct ones. I really need to change mine because my A4WD is flashing also. I don't use it at all but I like to have everything on my vehicles in working order. If we get snow around here I just use 4HI.... it and 4 LO work perfectly!

Man you guys are life savers. We thought we had bought the wrong part but turns out we had the right part wrong area. I am going to change these sensors out and see if that corrects my flashing OD light. I really appreciate all your help on this site and it has saved me alot of time and money to come here. Your knowledge and help are appreciated.
