Front wheel bearing questions, DRW

Truck is 4x4

I'm confused. I've searched a lot about wheel bearings on this site and everyone talked about the unit bearings. They don't say if they're SRW or DRW. I search at Advance Auto Parts and on PartsGuyEd.com and they list regular wheel bearings (inner/outer), not unit bearings. Do DRW trucks have unit bearings or regular servicable wheel bearings?

My truck has some barely noticable play in the hub. Does that mean I need new main bearings (maybe unit bearing) or could it be the needle bearings I've read about?

What is different between SRW and DRW 4x4 front axles?

Thanks in advance
Tyler

Give Ed a call and he will help you out. I don't even know if there is a difference between the two for front axles. I would assume there isn't but assuming anything could be a mistake.

When I replaced mine I looked around online but in the end Ed ending up helping me out.

OP-

If there's play, they definitely need to be changed out. Do both at once. It's very easy to do. look to ebay for new hub bearings. cheapest.

same unit for f-250 to f-550. need to know if you have 4wheel ABS or only RW ABS. you can buy the 4W ABS and simply cut the wire off if it's not needed.

I'm sure someone on here will know about the SRW/DRW thing. -I THINK- there's no difference, however this is almost a guess on my part.

the assy you're changing comes w/ new needle bearings and wheel studs. the tough part is getting the studs off the back. just jam-nut them and they come off.

I was hoping you were going to say that the DRW trucks had serviceable wheel bearings. I'm not looking forward to the cost of a unit bearing hub...

serviceable on the rear not the front. The only differance on the front ,other than abs and nonabs is the adapter that bolts on to the hub for drw otherwise all is the same.

So I'm assuming I can take the adapter off my hub and bolt it to the new hub. Correct?

yes it unbolts from the hub.Use a thinwall short socket and put your extention through the holes on the front of the adapter and it unbolts, then a couple of taps with a hammer and you have a srw setup.

I use a 2x4 about 2' long to wedge between the lugs and the floor to take the nuts off the spacer . Same thing putting it back on.

the 99-04 unit bearings are probably the weakest link in this era of super dutys.

the design is just not up to the task.

if you are selling your truck then sure go cheap Chinese because it isn't your problem when they prematurely fail.

if you are keeping the truck spent the couple extra bucks for Timken from a reliable source. fyi, Amazon isn't reliable for these. Riff Raff is as well as Ventures

if you plan on owning the truck forever then switch to a serviceable hub. Dynatrac or Yukon Free spin kit

Thats funny because timkins are chinese !! i have spent more money on a wheel bearing set because it was a timkin bearing only to pull it out of the box and find made in china right on it!

huge difference between “cheap chinees”. and “ OEM Chineese”

and like I said, buying from a source outside of the OEM channel of distribution is often going to result in you getting a counterfeit product. Spicer, Timken, Motorcraft, or any premium brand that commands a premium price is likely to be a fake nowadays, counterfeit products are a rampant problem in the automotive aftermarket.
