Open the gas cap and have someone turn the key on but not to the run position. Listen for the fuelpump prime whine. Make sure the truck door is shut so you are not distracted by the door ding. This is not a for sure test but if you hear the pump prime I would be looking at other systems like spark.

touch the gas pedal while your cranking it over if it fires up your idle air control is bad. this is the only way the engine can get air at an idle. if it starts that is your problem.

+1 on all the above. You can spray starter fluid into the TB if it try's to start you have spark. Even if you hear the pump it could still be the issue. harbor freight sells a fuel pressure gauge for $20

ok sprayed in the port with starter fluid ..... still no start.

also pulled one of the wires off the coil pack and had someone turn it over for me and there wasnt any arc from the wire to the coil pack ..there wasnt any arc.. not sure if you can do that with coil packs but i know you can check it that way with a distributor.
i just ran codes on it the other day and it came up............
misfire on 1 and 2 ....... mass airflow was lean on channel 1 and 2
could this be part of the problem?
they said i need to replace the plugs and wires ..... that maybe true but i wouldnt think that it would run the night before and not even start the following morning.
the engine did have a slight shimmy to it when it was running but i figured that was because of plugs and wires

thanks for your help guys .... i really need it.
first ford i have owned in over 20 yrs and its giving me nothing but problems.

the misfires and codes must have been there. now you have no sprak at all. WHAT ENGINE DO YOU HAVE? You should get acquainted with the fuse boxes. see if anything is blown in there. I doubt it though because your fuel pump is working. I think the fuel pump runs thru the pcm relay.

its the triton 4.6

took it to the shop.
guy checked it out real quick and said the tach wasnt moving so chances are the cam sensor or the crank shaft sensor.

im very familiar with the fuses what and where they are ..... i have pulled and checked every one in all pannels .

and yes the misfire codes were there before the truck quit running.
could that have been a tattle tale sign that the sensor was going out?

Did you tow it to a shop?. Are you going to fix it or have it done? The cam and crank sensor are cheap. I am not sure how tough they are to reach. if that was my truck I would bring the tuneup parts up to snuff . ie. plugs, wires, pcv? fuel filter, clean TB, clean iacv, clean maf, etc. check rad hoses. maintenance is the key to a truck built 13 years ago.

I don't think the tach moves while cranking, that's something that happens on an old ignition fired tach. Crank sensor is a possibility. Did you try pressing the gas a little while cranking (IAC test)?

Never payed attention to the tach until I read your post. Started my 97 5.4 A/T 3 times since this morning, not once did the tach move until it was running.
