Leaking axle and funky u joints.

Ok got the truck on the lift to look her over.

Right rear axle is leaking. Saw some fluid figured it may be a rear brake piston. Yanked the tire and the drum slid right off. yep covered in axle fluid.

Checked the front U joints for my clunking 4wd issue.

U joints from the transfer case to frony axle are taost. Looks pretty easy to change.

Right front axle both U joints LOTS of play.

What size axle nut socket do I need for the rear? Anything I should be aware of before I order parts and pull it apart?

How do you get the passenger side front axle out to change the joints? Or can ou do it with the axle in place?

As soon as I get this stuff done I can move onto the front suspension. After that its time for go fast parts.

You have to dissasemble the hud and pull thi spindle. This is a good time to repack the wheel bearings and service the needle bearings for the axle too.

I need to change rear axle seals too. My right rear brake and tire are covered in oil. Just discovered it the other night. Any one have pictures and a "how to"? I was looking for parts and got more confused. I saw axle seals, axle shaft seals, shaft seals and prices varied greatly. Also saw something about weather or not I had a 8.75 pinion or a 10.25 pinion. How many different seals came in these things?

you have a 10.25 full floating axle sterling axel in the back and the 8.8 iirc is the f150 semi floating axle which is the biggest pos axle i have seen in my life its scary when the axle breaks and the wheel walks off the truck!!!

Hoffman there are no axle seals on your rear the seal is in the hub. And like said above it will be the 10 1/4 rear.

I just did the rear axle seal in my 91 f-350 a couple days ago. It is very easy. take off tire, take off drum, remove the 8 bolts from the hub and the axle will slide out. get a axle nut socket and take off the axle nut. LOOK AT THE NUT FIRST IT WILL BE STAMPED RH OR LH for right hand or left hand threads. the hub will now slide off. The seal will pull out of the back of the hub and then just install the new one making sure you have the oil side facing the right direction. repack bearings and put back together. Good Luck. if shoes are covered in oil you probably want to replace those as well.

Do I need a special socket for the axle nut? Do you remember what size it was? Doesn't sound too hard, I need to do it soon. We are having another baby on the 12th so I don't know when I will get to it. If I have to drive it before I get it done I will have to check the oil in the rear end I don't want to ruin it by running it low on oil. If anyone has pics or manuals please post them, I only have a very generic manual that covers about 10 different trucks so it doesn't have many details. What torque does that axle nut get going back on and do the hub bolts have a torque? Thanks.

I don't remember the size of the socket. it is a special socket, it has four teeth on it. I just bought one from oriel auto parts it was like $14. I don't have my book with me but the torque was not very much. hub bolts where 60-70 lb-pounds i think and the axle was not very much either. it has a key on it that has to fit in the slot. i have no idea how long mine was leaking but the brake was packed full of oil and the diff was 2.5 quarts low when i filled it.

Thanks Jayme. I'll pick up a socket this weekend, my cheap manual might tell me what the axle nut torque is.

I believe the socket you need is an OTC 7269 for the 10.25".

I had to buy one yesterday in an emergency. The guy charged me $50. I can flip it over and use it on the front too. I figured I'll need it at least three more time when the other bearing go out. I thought I could turn the nut back on with a screw driver, ha, much easier with the socket.

Bought the socket today, cost $19. Seals cost $34 each and new brake shoes for a total bill of $116. Now to find the time to change them.

Cool. Thanks guys. I am going to price the socket out on the MAC truck friday morning. Probably hit harbor freight as I imagine the MAC guy will want way too much.

I will hit the axle seals/rear brakes and then move onto the front joints.

What do you guys think about greasable or none greasable u joints.
