Timing question just out of curiousity

Does the 7.3 have a timing chain and if so then how ofter are you supposed change it and where is it located or how does the crank keep timing with the cams?

ahh, so that's how it's done, now here's another question, do the gear ever need to be replaced and at how many miles? Where are the gear located?

The cam gear meshes directly to the crank gear. I highly doubt they would ever need replacing in your lifetime.

Thats not the PSD but the gear setup is the same.

The gears last long enough to re-use on rebuilds.
My new Ford long block, looking down into the cam gear, you could see the wear pattern on the cam gear.
Very definately a used gear, but it's made out of steel.

Oh! Good question!

And thanks for the picture, that paints quite a nice picture of the strength of the timing. Now if only they'd do that on some gas engines! LOL then again why, I don't ever want to drive one again.

If something caused one of the gears to shear a few teeth off then yes. But I think you would have a hard time putting enough force on those gears to shear the teeth off. Maybe after eleventy bajillion miles they would wear enough to not mesh well anymore

So if I was a dummy and used starting fluid out of desperation, after someone ran it out of fuel, and now my truck cuts out at high rpm and makes a complete revolution before starting. What did i mess up.

Ah... air in fuel syndrom. Did you get your fuel level back up to more than 1/4 tank?

Tugly may be right. May just need to work the air out of the fuel rails and like he said, put some fuel in it
