Shop for gear swap

Hello everyone.

I am looking for any recommendations as to a shop in the area Cities/St. Cloud/Willmar to talk to about a gear swap on my 2002 F350 4X4 with V10. I have 3.73 & contemplating 4.30.

I could swap axles myself, but it may be the same price just to have some one swap the gears in the current axles. Do not now how serious I am, but a price may cure me of the idea.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lee

Hey Lee. I personally have no experience in that area so I am not sure who to recommend. Maybe Troy or Mike (allis) will have some ideas. Dale (excursion4x4) is a mechanic. He may have some thoughts also. You can PM them. They have all posted in the BS thread or the camping thread.

Hey Lee I actually used to live in St.Cloud when I went to tech school but as far as shops go I never really used any I always did my own work. My brother used to live there so I will give him a shout and see if he knows of any. Why are you wanting to change them? Need more power or maybe that V10 doesnt suck enough gas yet? LOL

Troy,

Actually, I am probably going to wait to see if my new Y pipe and the 5 star tuner has done the trick. It pulled the camper before OK, so it should be better now. A gear swap was probably not economically feesable at this point.

Gotcha! I hope the tuner and Y pipe work for ya. Just needing a little more power pulling the 5ver?

It actually pulled it very well around here, even with the boat behind, but in the mountains and long hills it would struggle to maintain 65 mph. 3.73 gears are a little high, but for the 2000 miles a year I run in hills or mountains, it may not be worth it.

Yeah for that few a miles in the big hills you might just go a little slower instead of scraficing the mileage with the deeper gears. What do ya get for mileage pulling all that around here?

With the truck alone, before anything but a K&N filter empty I would get 12-13 on avg. The best was 14.6 on the way back from Iowa. Have not run more than 30 miles with the mods, or pulled anything.

With the 5er, I get 7.5-9 depending on hills & wind. Up north and back is usually around 8-9, but as good as 9.5. With the boat it drops to 7-8.5.

What do you get with those 7.3 dsl. I have heard some amazing numbers from people, and some really bad from people with the 6.0 & 6.4 DSL?

With the same gears as you and empty I have gotten as high as 20 maybe 21 on two lane roads. In the summer I usually average around 17. Pulling the 5ver I will get 10 -13 depending on wind. I got a little lower once but was bucking like 30 mph wind the whole way. All this and my only mods are 6637 intake and straight piped exhaust yet.

Those 7.3 are hard to beat on mileage and longevity. I tried to buy one before I bought my V10. It was a 2002 F350 CC 4x4 with 90000 miles & loaded. I drove all the way up to Blackduck for an auction and it went for $20200, I thought I would have a shot at it at $15000, and that was Oct of 2009.

Apparently the recession had not hit northern MN.

I know what you mean by the recession not hitting areas. I bought mine 4 yrs ago and I looked long and hard for the one I got. Probably searched for almost a year. I wouldnt trade it for anything.
