Bill, please do correct me if I am wrong, but in 65/66 weren't both the 240 and 300 I6 painted black with a black valve cover?

1966 was the first year that all FoMoCo engines were painted Ford Corporate Blue...including the valve covers.

1952/65 OHV 1-6's & V8's valve colors were painted specific colors, because this was Ford's (confusing) method for garages and body shops to ID the engine sizes.

ok, I am new here, so here is a question for the "guy" who knows all.

62 f-100 f10jr242240?

and what is the forest service green?

what would the standard rear end be with a 4 sp on the floor trans and a 223 inline 6.

do they make a limited slip for this rear end. only want it for when it snows.

and one more thing, what do I check to see why my gas gage don't work?

I just bought this truck yesterday.

Welcome to FTE

F10 = F100 2WD

J = 223 1V I-6.

R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant.

242240 = 1962, assembled December 1961.

Post all the codes found on the Warranty Plate, located on the inside of the glovebox door.

There were three different rear axles used in these truck. Standard equipment was the Ford 9 inch without Limited Slip, or two optional Dana rear axles (44 & 60.2) w/Limited Slip.

Since there are so many possible axle ratios, there's no way to know what the ratio is until the AXLE code is decoded....which will also decode to the type of rear axle.

I don't know what you are refering to when you say Forest Service Green, it's not any Ford color I'm aware of.

The COLOR code is listed on the 2nd line of the Warranty Plate between the W.B. (wheelbase) and MODEL code. If there is no code, the truck was painted a non standard Ford color.

If the truck was originally ordered by the Dept of the Interior, the National Park Service & Division of Forestry had their vehicles painted a special non standard dark green.

If the COLOR code is L = Dark Green = standard Ford color.

On the top of the In-Cab fuel tank are 4 (or 5) screws that attach the fuel sending unit to the tank. Remove the sending unit, remove the float from its crooked arm and shake it.

Can you hear gas sloshing around inside it?

The float is made from two pieces of copper soldered together. Solder breaks down, gas seeps in, float settles to the bottom of the tank.

The float is available from Ford and fits ALL 1957/79 Passenger Cars, Trucks, Bronco's and Econolines.

If the float is OK, there are myriad reasons why the fuel gauge doesn't register. The sending unit could be burned out, the wiring could be frayed, causing a short, the dash gauge could be defective, or...

If the temperature gauge doesn't work, either...it's prolly the ICVR = Instrument Cluster Voltage Regulator, that bolts to the back of the cluster, regulates the flow of electricity to these two gauges.

hi barnie (many thanks for the information)this truck did have bucket seats, but the last owner took them out and chucked them away( says they where past there best) and put in a bench seat,nice job trimmed in the same colours as the truck blue and white (i am trying to find photos of this original bucket set up) ,also it is now painted torquoise and wimbledon white
i cannot see any sign of that beige colour,the bulkhead on the engine side is white and this looks original,this truck has got all the nice options,i think they called it a deluxe camper special package even got carpet covering the rear tank behind the seats,its got no rust after spending all its life in california,need to do a few jobs on it to make it mint ( mainly on the paint job i think its enamel it chipping like crazy but looks really nice),i think someone has removed the air con,some parts are still there i.e front heat exchanger/bracket on engine twin pulleys etc,also it has had the bed sprayed with black bed liner, this has got to go so i can get it back to original painted surface,also looking for its missing hub caps if they where fitted to this model,i just changed the diff oil. it looked like it had been there since 1965 what a mess !!black gooo, i will run the truck with new oil then dump it, say after 100 miles to make sure i have got rid of the all the crud,its quite hard to run a truck like this in new zealand parts are a pain,the truck is showing 63000 miles and looks to be original. any idea where the older type slide campers are available for that year,i have done all the suspension rubbers and its got the 1976-78 front disc brake/servo upgrade(stops on a sixpence) rear axle is still original with all its tags,just got new dash from dennis C, the original is looking its age but i will keep the original gauges amp oil etc,also i am looking to o/h the COM gearbox its got a leak from the front seal ,any ideas who are the best people in califronia(cheaper post from this state) for these parts and any idea if they do o/h kits,i have workshop manuals for both the 65 and 76-78 on cd so i have ordered a parts manual that covers all the trucks from 1965 on,also i need the chrome trims thats go around the built in door pockets mine are cracked and i must admit it needs new zippers,it still has it original radio but seems to pick up one new zealand station or one in outer mongolia,i think its AM only buts a nice touch,just like to hear the engine anyway,thanks to everyone for there knowledge and help

No Problem, yargnitram.

You may be able to see some of the original Sandshell Beige if you looked under some trim or maybe you'll need to scratch some of the torquoise/white off to see what's under it.

I'd suggest that your truck was originally ordered with the RANGER trim package option, since only the RANGER package came with the fuel tank carpet covering and was originally outfitted with bucket seats.

Since you or someone else has made some mid-70's upgrades to the brakes, and has dispensed with the original bucket seats, you might consider scrapping the COM automatic transmission and stepping up to a newer-style C6 automatic transmission as well. Although I haven't done such a swap (I'm a 4speed guy), I don't think there is that much to change to make the swap work. I'm sure there is MUCH more aftermarket & service support for the C6 than for the COM.

I can't provide any information about what type/style air-conditioning unit it would/could have been outfitted with. Since most I've seen were under the dash units (meaning "in the way"), and you're missing major components, I'd suggest you just strip out the few remaining A/C parts.

Yes, those vintage slide-in campers from the 60's/70's in any kind of good shape are hard to find any more. Most have gone the way of the scrapyard. If you do locate a nice one, plan on it being worth some serious cash!

If I'm recalling correctly, I don't think hubcaps were factory-available for the '65 F250s, regardless if it had the Ranger and/or Camper Special package. However, hubcaps for the '65 F100s were available.

I know the zippered door pockets are being remanufactured. So, you be able to locate some of the chrome trim from the re-man suppliers. I'd start with NPD.

The original radio was only offered as a AM radio. No FM radio was offered in any interior package for the '65 F100/F250s.

Yep, that sure sounds like a nice ol' truck, my friend!

H is one of the three Ranger only BODY codes used in 1965. There were three different codes used in 1966.

The only way to tell if a 1965 or 1966 is a real Ranger...or not, is by the Ranger only specific body codes.

The bucket seats are the same as 1965/66 Mustang. The Palomino seat covers are the same as 1965 Mustang (non GT).

Over 1,000,000 1965/66 Mustangs came with these seats, so they aren't too hard to find. The seat covers are reproduced, as is the foam padding.

The seat tracks are the same as 1965/70 Mustang w/bucket seats. The four 'seat risers" that bolt to the floor pan...then the tracks bolt to these, are reproduced.

Seat risers were necessary for 1965/66 Rangers, because they lift up the seats and level them. Seat risers were not used in Mustangs.

Only painted hubcaps were available on 1961/66 F250 2WD's. Rear only for 4WD's.

Stainless steel hubcaps were offered for F250's beginning in 1967, but...these are "outies."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The door pockets are reproduced in black, come with the chrome plastic surround mouldings.

AFAIK, no one is selling just the mouldings. I called Bob Drake (bobdrake.com), who is reproducing the pockets...he said not available separately.
