check engine light

I think I know the answer to my own question but I want to check to make sure what you guys think. I got to take my truck out for a decent test drive today for the first time really get after it and see how it runs after my mods. It seems to pull pretty hard, hit 33 lbs of boost, but the check engine light came on. I think its probably that my 15* pump isn't big enough, am I right? Once I got home I shut her down and started it back up and the light was off.

Am I right on day to day normal towing that pump would be big enough its just that when I get after it so hard that I'm running out of oil? I pull some damn big trailers and am thinking I should just put a 17* on it or do any of you think the 15* will work? I know where I can get one pretty cheap off of a SD. That should be big enough, right? Remember I don't want a race truck, just a strong CORRECTLY put together tow rig.

Thanks guys.

Its is probably your HPOP like you say. Cause did the light come on at a high RPM? If so I say its your HPOP not being able to make enough pressure.

The CEL is probably from the hpop running out of oil. I would not be to worried about it unless your running full throttle most of the time.

Sounds like you do a lot of towing though, so if you got the hook up for the SD hpop I'd go with it. It'll make ya feel better in the long run.

I also would think the hpop. But, at 33 lbs boost you might be setting a cel that way. My 15* could not keep up eighter, it would start bucking so hard the dishes fell out of the cabinets in the 5er. I went to a 17* and problem solved. Now I have the adrenaline and love it, it never gives up.

I set a cel again just in 30 hp tow mode with an empty 5th wheel equipment trailer on. I never had it at wot at all, kinda close probably, got after it fairly good to get up to speed after turning on the highway and it set the light again. I got home, shut it off, started again and it was gone.

Think it is still just my hpop? Just checkin, don't want to be missing something I should be checking.

Thanks again guys

Sounds like the HPOP to me. Also, and I could be wrong about this, 33-lbs boost seems like a lot for these trucks. You could setting the CEL because of an overboost condition. What codes are you getting?

If you are setting an overboost code, there are ways around that, too. An inline adjustable pressure regulator set at 20 PSI, give or take, should prevent an overboost code. You'll still be boosting to 33-lbs or whatever, but the computer will only "see" what you set the regulator at.

I think a search for "Overboost Annilator" or something like that should give you plenty of information.

My od light has not been flashing at all so I shouldn't have any codes right? The only thing that has happened is the check engine light came on.

The 33 lbs of boost of course only came in the 140hp mode at wot. I wasn't over 15 lbs for sure when it set it today in the 30 hp tow mode. Actually I don't think it was over 10.

If you're setting off your CEL while towing in a 30hp tune and making less than 10lbs boost I would be looking for a problem other than HPOP not keeping up. Get it scanned for codes.

Mine was not flashing either or I missed a flash or two. I found codes set that had since cleared on mine when I scanned it.

OK I'll get them read. Since I didn't have money for the scan guage buy at the time I guess I'll have to find someone who can read it for me.

I started it this morning to go get fuel cause both tanks were real low. The fuel had been in there since December. That's how much I drive it in the winter. It wouldn't start in the stock mode, just try for a half a second and stop. Switched it to the tow mode and it sounded like a big cam motor when it started. It was 35* outside so not real cold. Its sitting in a shed too. It smoothed out after 15 seconds or so and wasn't smoking at all. Then I went to get fuel and it was missing on the way to the station. I left it run at the station, put fuel in it and drove a few miles and it ran fine.

Thanks guys.

I just got a hold of a buddy of mine and he is going to come over tomorrow. He has a superchips programmer and he said it will read the codes so I guess I'll know more tomorrow.

Drian your fuel bowl out. I slit the edge of a 3/8" id hose and put some lube on it and using a pair of pliers pushed it up onto the end of the drain tubing and then secured it with a small worm gear. I keep it snug to the fuel lines that run on the yoke underneth the truck with tye wraps. It comes in handy if you want to see what is draining out of your bowl or if you need to drain in the garage/barn/shed or what not. Drain it into a glass and let it settle out to see if there is water in the bottom of the glass. Looking under the truck on your back, just left of center; locate the batt wire that is running to the starter. Follow it until it reaches a cable strap, reach above the cable strap to find the tubing end.

I just drained it when I did my mods at the end of january but I will do it again. I cleaned the screen in there too which wasn't bad. Just waiting for my buddy to call now so we can get the codes. He just called while on the computer here now so I guess I'll report back in a little while.

Started it to move it into the warm side of the shop and it was running real rough like a miss again while moving it over. Got in and here are the codes:

P0236 Turbo Boost Sensor A Circuit Performance --- is this an overboost code?

P0344 CMP Sensor Circuit Intermittent --- don't know need help

P0470 Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor Circuit Malfunction -- I assume this is because I eliminated my ebpv

P0603 Internal Control Module KAM Error -- don't know need help

P1211 ICP Not Controllable - Pressure Above/Below Desired -- Need help

We cleared all the codes and started it, then shut it down and checked them again. All that came up was P1111 which is system pass. It was running fine when I pulled it back around into the cold strorage part of the shop where I park it.

Any ideas and suggestions always welcome. Thanks guys

WHERE IS THE CODE FOR THIS ABOVE?

P0344 CMP Sensor Circuit Intermittent --- don't know need help
EITHER WHEN YOU CHANGED THE CPS OR IT HAS SOME WIRING ISSUES OR THE THING NEEDS A NEW ONE OR SHIMMED

P0470 Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor Circuit Malfunction -- I assume this is because I eliminated my ebpv I AGREE

P0603 Internal Control Module KAM Error -- don't know need help
THE 603 CODE IS FOR YOUR PCM KEEP ALIVE MEMORY. YOU BEEN DICONNECTING THE BATTS? IF SO IT HAS TO RUN A WHILE TO CLEAR THE CODE.

P1211 ICP Not Controllable - Pressure Above/Below Desired -- Need help
CHECK THE ICP TOP LEFT OF THE HPOP, DISCONNECT AND CHECK FOR OIL.

We cleared all the codes and started it, then shut it down and checked them again. All that came up was P1111 which is system pass. It was running fine when I pulled it back around into the cold strorage part of the shop where I park it.

YOU MAY HAVE SOME BAD GPS AND YOU MAY WANT TO HOOK IT UP TO A TIMER TO RUN THE CRANK CASE HEATER ON 3 OR 4 HOURS BEFORE START UP.

Any ideas and suggestions always welcome. Thanks guys
I WOULD CHANGE OUT THE CPS AND LOOK FOR WIRING ISSUES THERE. i WOULD LOOK FOR WIRING ISSUES ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE FPR WHERE THE ICP WIRE ROUTES. I WOULD UN PLUG THE MAP SENSOR WIRING CONNECTION WHEN IT RUNNING AND SEE IT IT RUNS BETTER.
