302 H.O. With C4 ?

Hi i just purchased a 302 H.O. motor from a stang im wondering if i will have a problem mounting it to a 1972 c4 tranny ? im also wondering what the differences are between the 302 and the 302 H.O. besides cam/lifters, fireing order and ballance are they all the same? i.e. motor mounts, distributor, intakes(carb not efi) ,headders, water pump, power steering pumps? u know all the fun stuff

if it came out of an auto you should be fine, and the heads are different, do a wiki search on the engine and you'll find all that info. if its a true ho it should have a 4bbl carb, swap the manis from your old 302 to the new one, and swap the engine mounts also. that should about do it. it should have a DS2 dist and that is really simple to wire in, look up on google. good luck with this simple swap.

you will need a 50 oz flex plate for the H.0. The 72 c-4 would have a 28 oz flex plate it would work but it would be out of balance and could break the flex plate. Just count the teeth on the 72 flex plate and find a 50 oz with that number of teeth I believe there are 2 a 144 tooth and a 164 tooth. The rest of the 302 is all the same as for headers and mounts. different water pumps for the serpentine system then the fan belt style

On the 302 h.o don't forget the plugs in the back of the head. Not sure the size but you might have to get the plugs that insert into the back of the head, they are part of the exhaust runner. I think part of the smog crap.

There is a freeze plug kit you can get that has the plugs you need or measure the hole and just get the plugs you need.

Whats the casting numbers on the heads and balancer? Does it have the tapped holes in the lifer valley for the lifter tray? Did it have roller lifters?

Ford didn't start the roller till 85 for the 5.0 so if has the tappped holes its probably a H.O.

At first I thought it may have been out of a 1980/81 Mustang in which case it would be a 4.2 liter/255cid. It is basically a smaller bore 3.68". These were produced during the 80/81 year models.*

However I found the casting number for a 255, E0SE-AE Here

I did come across this chart that says your block is a 5.0 from 80-85.

The 85 5.0 HO with an auto had a CFI fuel injection system and did not have a roller cam.* I "believe" the roller block had an E5 casting number.

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the info I found on the web, however,
Google is you friend.

ok so would i be able to use a roller cam if i tap those two holes i was hoping to use the f 303 cam or would it be a retro fit cam that i would half to use and i measured the bores it is a 4.00 block so it's a 302 not a 255

I do not know the answer to your question. I think I know what you need to do but I don't want to post misinformation because I have no first hand experience performing this conversion. My supercharged 5.0 was already a roller.

Of course there is a lot of info on the net. I would call one of the cam outfits that sells retro roller conversions.

Edit: I did find this though. But I think Crane is out of business now.
