My '79 F-100 has the typical raised F-O-R-D letters on the tailgate. The tailgate's all one color right now, so I started to mask them off to paint them when I realized someone might make some stick-ons or decals of this lettering, which might actually end up looking better than painting them.
The direction I took was to have my letter airbrushed so that they look more three dimensional. If you have a good graphic artist in your area, you can get the letters done for reasonable money, and you can have them done any way you want. After it's done, then clearcoat the tailgate, and it's permanent. I think I had mine done for around $150, which I thought was fair.
It's not really the best picture for detail on the letters, but you get the idea....when I finally have the truck out of the garage later this summer, I'll take some more detailed shots.
Jeff's Bronco Graveyard sells the stick-on set. However, I ordered them one time and tried them, and they looked terrible. They were cut unevenly and hardly even matched the raised lettering.
