1960 F100 motor swap
what do i need to do to put a 460 from a 75 Ford in my 1960 Ford F100? Will it bolt up to the stock 4 speed manual tranny? Will the tranny hold up to the pounding of the 460? If it won't bolt up is there a conversion kit? If the tranny won't cut it what tranny should i get? I'm not going for performance yet just want to get it on the road again. It had the 223 inline 6 motor originally. please help.

You'll have to get another tranny, yours won't bolt up.

you might have to find a t-18 4 speed rather than the t-98 you have now as i think the input shaft is bigger on the t-98. but other than that you will need a bellhousing out of a 460 with a 4speed and it should bolt up fine. although im not super sure they ran the 460s with the t-18s. but as far as them holding up to the power i wouldnt worry, they dont call these trannies crashbox 4 speeds for nothing.

The easiest way to swap in a 460 is to buy the swap crossmember that's made by Trans-Dapt part # 9313.

For the Ford 460 look for a T-19. It's stronger then the T-18.

If you want a 5spd you need to look for a ZF 5spd out of an EFI 460 truck. I think they started using the ZF 5spd on the 460's in either 88 or 89. You will need to make sure and get one for a 460 ( 7.5L ) though. The bellhousings are part of the transmission case and are not removable. So a ZF 5spd off a 5.8L won't fit your engine.

Here is what i found out about the ZF tranny's
ZF S542 and S547
The S 542 Heavy duty 5 speed fully synchronized transmission with aluminum case and extension housing. The bell housing is integral to the case. Shifter is mounted to small shift cover on top of unit. Built in 2 and 4WD versions. This unit is used in Ford F250, F30, F450, and Super duty trucks from 1987-94. The Super duty model has a mechanical park brake assembly mounted to the extension housing. The S542 is found behind 300, 302, 351, 460, and diesel power plants. The S547 unit is used behind the same engines from 1995 to present. Both units have PTO covers on each side of case. On the left side of the case is mounted and ID tag, which gives the Ford Part number, the ZF part number and the unit serial number. Great care should be taken to properly identify the unit you are working on as both the S542 and S547 appear to be the same and with the great variety of ratios available, it is easy to order the wrong parts.
so which would be better the ZF S542 or the S547? or does it matter? what about the ratios? How do i found out which ratio i need?
