92 5.0 5 speed sloppy shifting

Looking for some input before I purchase this truck.

It's a 92 F150 ext cab real clean has 192k They say the trans shifts sloppy.

Is that a trans problem of wear on the shifting rod?

Those 5 speed shifters like to wear out bushings. Should be a fairly easy fix

Sloppy how? If the stick just feels loose there is a special tapered bolt that holds the stick into place. It is easy to get to. All you have to do is pull the boot back around the shifter and you will be looking straight at it.

Be careful though, I'm on my 3rd M5ODR2 since I got my rig in June. They are weak transmissions. If the last one wasn't under warranty I would of swapped to the ZF which I highly recommend compared to these crap Mazda transmissions.

I don't know where you are from but it is very hard to find any decent manual trans re-builders anymore. So if the trans is bad, you might have to go rebuilt $$$.

Bad news: As per prior posts, shifting bushings and sometimes shift forks wear on these.

Good news: Access panel in cab allows repair with trans in truck. Replace worn parts, replace plastic plugs up top, flush it out, fill it up and drive it.

Other item on this is hydraulic clutch. Slave is concentric to input shaft, so it requires r&r of the trans to repair if leaking or goes kaput.

Good luck with it.

Well I test drive it on friday. price is right and I'm in need of a truck in a bad way. The Ext cab is the bonus here as from time to time have kids to haul.
I'll have a list of what ifs after the test drive

The most common failure on those is the shift pins. They are easy to find on eBay and easy to replace. It's not guaranteed that is your problem, but it happens a lot to the Mazda 5-speed trans.

Okay the shifter is sloppy if your aim is good goes right into gear. Someone that is not real good with a manual would have lots of problems. In gear the shift rod feels like it's in neutral any thoughts of what to look for

yeah but the ZF has it own set of problems what are you doing that you went through 3 trannys I have the ZF and had to do the hydralics and replaced the clutch while it was apart the previous owned liked to do burnouts with 35" tires he ended up blowing the tranny all over the street and he put in a new ZF

I bought my truck and ended up putting 6K into it with brakes shocks motor mounts and exhaust these trucks are work trucks and they get the crap kicked out of then but thet still keep running but they need alot of TLC I would look for rust on the frame and body I would rahter have a blown tranny than serious rust

I had the same problem several years ago with my 88 f150 4x4 5 speed. I needed the shifter pins. The dealer did not sell just the pins, so I found a round head bolt the same size and made me a pin. It has worked ever since. I am glad to know someone has them on Ebay now.
