Unhappy I need help?

I JUST GOT ME A 1987 F150 LONG BED 4X4 AND THE FR0NT-END IS MAKING A NOISE WHEN ENGAUGED LIKE AN AXLE IS BROKE. IS THIS SOMETHING I CAN FIX OR DO I NEED TO TAKE IT TO A SHOP. I'M A FAIRLY GOOD MECHANIC, BUT I'VE NEVER WORKED ON THIS TYPE OF FRONT-END. Thanks

There was not really enough info in your post, we need to know when it is doing it, like in a turn, turning left or right, braking. Really anything that would give more ideas what is involved..

Don't give up on your Ford because of a smart a** remark,, The post before mine just struck me as funny, and I just let go.. Sorry...

Please accept my apologies..

I notice it when I locked the hubs in and took a right while turning. I immediatley stopped and unlocked them and drove for a short distance and them stopped. I checked both u-joints and they looked fine. This leaves me with what I should do now and what tools I may need.

Was it seemingly doing OK before the turn? If so it could be a bad u_joint, (looks alone can be deceiving)(as in frozen up or trying to,) or it could be a bushing is shot and the binding when turning in 4X4 is making it bang on it's mount..

I'm not a 4X4 expert, just tossing ideas at you..

I'm leaning towards U joints. I had one go and it only made noise when I was backing up & turning I think. It's not uncommon for these to start making noise when they wear out.

Thanks a lot guys. I Just bought the truck and the a** I got it from didn't tell me that it had so many problems. I"ve fixed a lot of little bull crap already. I need to know how to pull the axles out and how hard is it?
