66 factory 4x4 to bigfoots little brother

i have a 66 ford f100 factory 4x4 long bed. im gonna shorten the wheelbase about 2ft. put in rockwell 2 1/2 ton axles, 2 1/2 t-case 2 1/2 tranny and probably a deisel cuz the adapter from that tranny to a ford v8 is really expensive and sense i have a 352 it would probably cost more than the whole truck. but anyway thats the plan. any suggestions or lessons learned would appreciated.

First off...cool build. Ive had a couple 65 and 66 trucks and always wanted to build one up.

No need for the 2.5 trans. NP435 or a C6 will hold up just fine but the 2.5 Tcase will be a good idea. 435s were used all the way up to F700s and C6s are used in the actual bigfoot.

352 is going to bring teh suck with a ***** ton of rubber. The gearing of a rockwell makes it pretty foolish to run any tire smaller than 44s. Best to find at minimum a 390 or even better at minimum a 390 with a 428 crank if you are dead set on using a FE. The other choice would be a 460. You know you'll be there eventually. Why waste time and money building up a sub par FE?

Do a search for my old buddy Quadzilla here in the offroad forum. He was building an early 90s F150 on rocks while using a ZF 5spd. His build might still be in the Tech section...not sure. Maybe he deleted the pics when he left though.

right on

i was on this other thread for 61-66 trucks and they thought i should cut the truck up. its cool that wasnt what u guys said.
as for the lift as little as possible. articulation is important but not worth being top heavy. or thats what i think. boyce equipment ( the place im gettin the drive train from) sells leaf spring kits also, but they are for a 2.5. i dont know if they take some of the leaves out so it isnt super stiff or what? and they are 10 inches of lift. i think that is too much. i would like to go about 4 to 5 inches and cut the fenders.
as for the 2.5 trans it bolts up to the t-case with no adapters and i can use the 2.5 driveshafts. and as for the 352 im gonna sell it and put a cummins diesel. why u say cuz it bolt directly to the tranny and the 352 is really rare and the adapter for it probably cost more than the whole truck. on the website it says that all the adapters for ford gas motors are expensive. otherwise i would toss in a 460. all that is a little out of my price range. in fact all this stuff probably is also, but as long as i dont show my wife the bill i should be ok.and i think for crawlin a diesel should be the best fit. lots of tourque and really reliable. my papa tom own a shop and specializes in diesel and said for one of these simple diesels i wont have to get a new wiring harness or anything it only needs a hot neutral and a ground and that pushes the limit of my electrical ability as it is. i think that i will go with leafs up front and back. much easier to fab and i should get plenty of flex. oh and im do full hydraulic steering. its an option with the front axle and if im gonna put the biggest tires that i can afford might as well turn em real easy. well i think that i have a plan to replace all the weak points or at least all i ca think of. if u guys have any suggestions or lessons learned im all ears. oh yeah how do u put pics on here?

Youre going to need 10" at minimum to clear the top load pinion.

Holy over priced seller Batman!

Isnt the 2.5 tcase divorced? Meaning you can run whatever trans you want. Nothing is going to be bolt in anyway...might as well go common. You can buy 1480 yokes for pretty much any common trans too.

forget about wheel speed then. I hope this build isnt for mud.

the rock is what 6.12 ratio?
i know its 6.xx
So as kris said anything smaller than a 44 is going to be real slow...
You can get 52" military surplus tires for 250 a piece...
When you start goin big, it gets expensive...
When you start goin THAT big, its real expensive.

Kris, what did nick ever do with his truck?

Rocks are 6.71 or 6.72:1 cant remember. I think its 6.72:1. 6.71:1 is a Dana ratio

XMLs FTW! but suck nuts in the mud. Better go with R2s

I still talk with Nick every once and a while. Hanging out on Chuckstrucks mostly. He basically hasnt done much to the truck since he left here almost 2yrs ago.

So they killed mudfest and his dreams for his truck along with it?
Yea, XML's but if your goin into that big of a tire size, there aren't awhole lot of mud holes that will swallow you up...

I hate he quit working on the truck. It certainly had potential.

OP,
you getting those axles cut down? IE two short sides pinion in the middle or are you going full width?
