Average cost to have have head gasket replaced and studs replaced
I was just wandering how much you guys have payed to have your head studs and gaskets replaced? I haven't blown them yet put I just want to be prepared.
My local diesel guy charges around $3500 to do the headgaskets and ARPs (including parts & labor). Not sure if that is high...
the stud set alone is about $500 then you got oil, coolant gaskets etc, hopefully they put in new diesel O rings while they are at it... so at most you have $1000 in parts the rest is labor... but as you have to lift the body off the frame that is where all your labor is....
you can do the studs in the veh without lifting the body off. we get 20 hours labor to do the studs. we also send the heads out to be cut to make sure we dont have a problem with the new gaskets. 3500 sounds about right.

I had a $1000 in parts when I did my ARP stud install in April 09. $500 for studs, $350 for a Neal Tech. upgraded EGR cooler and the remainder in gaskets, coolant and oil. I had an estimate from my local dealer of $2850 to replace the gaskets, install the studs and install the EGR cooler I provided.
If you do not have HG issues then you don't need to replace the HGs. You just need to replace the fasteners. This will allow for additional tuner HP and greatly improve the reliability.
That is what I did. I replaced the OEM TTY bolts one at a time with ARP studs and did not replace the HGs. Did the job myself and have not had any issues other then to rebuild the oil cooler in December 09.
If you want to read what I did and how I did it, search the 6.0 forum for "DSMMH" and you will see the stud install post.
There are those on this site that will discourage you from doing what I did and they are certainly entitled to their opinion. I'm just putting out another option that I had success with for you to consider.
I verified I had success because before the stud install, I had a very small amount of exhaust gas in my coolant. After the stud install, I had no exhaust gas in my coolant. I verified this with a U-View Gas and Diesel Combustion Gas Leak Testing Kit ($50).
