2008 SUPER-DUTY STEREO UPGRADE

i had a 2008 super-duty chassis/cab that came with the am/fm/cd/mp3/aux input stereo - it's time to get rid of that one so i took the stereo out of the 2008 and put it into this 2009 that i just got.

this 2009 had just the plain-jane am/fm tuner. so i swapped the two and now the cd/mp3 player i works fine except for the button illumination/dimmer. the stereo does not dim and the buttons do not light up when the headlights are turned on. i've already verified everything in the stereo harness; 12v constant, 12v switched/acc, grounds, and illimination i just do not know where to start on the stereo??

It could be a GEM/BCM issue, since these trucks got CAN nothing is as simple as power and ground. There is a databus that runs through all of the modules, since you have verified that the wires are acting correctly it must mean the functions are computer controlled and not getting the command.

is there any real way to tell?? what is CAN??

i did verify that the illumination/dimmer switch functioned coming out of the stereo harness- 12v down to 2v. the display stays lit but when the headlights are switched on the display doesn't dim and the buttons do not illuminate.

it's probably just a cosmetic difference but the dimmer switch in this one differs from the one in my old truck by the way the switch looks.

CAN Controller Area Network. It's a two wire databuss that communicates through all of the computer systems. Depending on the generation and engineer's intent, but it can do everything from tell the engine it's okay to start because the right key is present, or to turn the radio on/off, and plenty more functions.
