2004 Explorer won't turn over.....

I had the same symptoms a few months back in my 2005. Turns out my transmission shift linkage cable is loose/broken. Haven't had time to deal with it here in the snow/cold. When it won't start in park, I simply slide the shifter from P to R to N (by feel NOT by the indicator needle on the dash). Once in Neutral, the safety over-rides will allow the engine to start. Recommend you engage the parking brake and remember to place a foot on the brake to allow the shifter to move as you locate Neutral. Good luck.

I don't own one of these trucks, so these thoughts are mostly theory. make sure if you have any theft or remote starter equipment that it is working properly. . if you have lights, power, etc. You probably have an issue with either your "starter control circuit" or your starter/solenoid is bad. devices that are part of your starter control circuit are , ignition switch, starter relay ,(I think in your power distribution box #12), neutral safety switch( if you have a standard itis a clutch positioning switch), depending on your ability you can take a multimeter and start checking these for power.

Had a similar issue with my Aviator recently, but I was unfortunately told by some bozo at Autozone that my alternator was fine - it turned out that it was slowly croaking as I suspected, but he didn't know how to operate his test box well enough!
Anyway, all the accessories worked, but my battery was dropping below 10 volts (and it was a new battery as well). Without 10 volts, the starter relay will not even fire, so nothing will happen. Once I charged up the battery and replaced the alternator, all has been fine.
Before I figured out the alternator was actually going down-hill, I was thinking it was the ignition switch, or maybe the transmission range sensor, or maybe a defective battery, or maybe a loose wire...
