P0470 and P1211

I've been having an intermittent loss of power lasting only a few seconds along with the SES light. Pulled codes and got a P0470 and P1211 code. Recently replaced glow plugs so I was wondering about the UVCH being loosened while valve covers were off. Also, when power loss occurs, engine sounds different (louder dieseling sound). Stock truck. Any ideas as to what my problem might be. Thanks in advance!

Pretty common codes for a chipped truck, but you say yours is stock. How old is the engine oil? Is it full? What type and weight are you running? What are the outside and engine temps when this happens? Does it happen when the engine is under a heavy load or strong acceleration? Fuel tank too low? Any in tank mods done?

What are you using to pull the codes?

Could be a connection that was disturbed when working on that project. Also, check your wiring to the IPR. A friend of mine was recently having similar problems and there was chafing found at the tin nut on the IPR. One of the wires was intermittently grounding out against this nut and giving a SES light when it ran bad. He got the P1211 code, but also had another which I can"t recall at this time.

Oil changed around 1000 miles ago. Oil level good.

It has only occured two times over the last couple of weeks. Air temps were anywhere from low 30's to low 50's. No in tank or other fuel mods. Bone stock. Has occured under acceleration, but not at what I would call hard acceleration. Fuel tank is almost full. My local mechanic used some type of Snap-On scanner. I'll check the wiring to the IPR again. I've quickly looked over everything, but haven't seen any obvious wiring problems.

I made a 350 mile trip with the truck today. SES light and loss of power once within 2 miles of leaving home, then ran fine the rest of the way. I don't know if it is just coincidence or not, but thinking back it has always had the hiccup within the first few minutes of driving before it reached operating temp. Does this give anyone any clues as to what the problem could be? I've been a lurker, just reading everyone else's posts for years. I guess other than minor stuff, I've never really had any problems to post on here about. This is a wonderful place to get opinions on problems though, and I appreciate any help that anyone can give!

Louder diesel sounds and issues under acceleration I would guess fuel restriction from plugged screens inside the mixing chamber in the tank.

Problems only when cold I would guess oil issues. Either low, old or improper.

If the prob;em were more consistent, you could probably catch it by monitoring live data. Intermittent problems are harder to catch. In addition to checking the IPR wiring, also check the ICP wires and make sure you got the 42 pin connector put back together snug after your valve cover work.

Now that you've started posting, don't be so shy. If you've been reading for years, you probably know the answer to many of the questions posted here.

Is there any way that I can check further to see if it could be clogged screens in the tank without dropping it?

Yes. You could buy a gauge, fittings, hose, and plumb a fuel pressure gauge into one of the ports on the back side of the fuel filter bowl, then watch the pressure under WOT.

An easier check would be to just baby it and drive like a grandpa until the tank is almost empty, then drop it. There's a good chance you've got some crud in the screens, so why not just plan on doing the in tank mods while you have the tank down?

I checked this afternoon for chaffed wires and found nothing. I drove only a short trip today and the truck did fine. I did notice something that might be another clue or just a coincidence. When I went to start the truck, I noticed that the battery gauge went way down. I could hear something that sounded like a hissing noise (almost like air) coming from around the area of the fuel filter. The noise continued for around 10 seconds and then quit. When the noise quit, the battery gauge jumped back up. I switched the truck off and back on without starting. It made the same noise with the same gauge drop again and rise when the noise quit. I also noticed a buzzing noise like a relay kicking in and out rapidly under the dash when the key was first turned on. The buzzing noise and hissing noise are different than anything that I've ever noticed before. I went back out tonight and tried again and it did not do it. My batteries are not that old (less than three years) so I'm wondering if there is some huge power draw occuring that could be linked to my SES light problem.

I forgot to post that I haven't been noticing any battery problems until yesterday. I'ts been starting fine even in much colder conditions.

You could try unplugging the fuel bowl heater to see if it is beginning to short out.

I think it might be time to replace batteries on top of my other problem. Cleared codes and took truck on three short trips today after having to jump it off two out of the three trips. Third trip it started fine without battery gauge dropping. Hissing noise from fuel filter area is gone. I don't know what's going on with that. I'm going to drive it a few days and see if I get an SES light or have any new codes appear.
