Clutch / tranny upgrades for 1996 M50D Truck?

I have the 4.9L six and have read that the ZF S542 / S547 might work with it depending on the flywheel / clutch kit / etc., used. I like the idea of having a "stealth" heavy duty truck, and a clutch kit is in my future anyway. Can anyone point me to a thread that "connects the dots" for me? I'm also interested in knowing drive ratios & the like.

This thread talks about it, and has ratios posted on page 2 iirc. Post 3 has two links to two other threads on the same subject.

The ZF has wider ratios, a lower first and is stronger than the Mazda box. Gear spacing is different, so compare the numbers.

Looks like you can come up with a bolt-up solution if you change enough parts. Only thing I don't have is the equivalent drive ratios for the different gears. For the M50D M5R2:

1 - 3.40:1

2 - 2.20:1

3 - 1.50:1

4 - 1.00:1

5 - 0.79:1

Anyone know the deal for the ZF transmissions?

Page two, post 19 on the link above.

Where did you get those ratios? They are not the ratios listed for the Mazda box in an F150.

OK, both sets of ratios appear here:

Ford Motor Company Transmission Gear Ratio's Man

The ones above appear to be from the Ranger-spec'd M5OD.

Thanks for the link.

Thanks for your link too. So what I was looking at was apparently an approximation of the values for one of the R1 variants, and should have been using:

M5OD-R2 3.91 2.24 1.49 1.00 0.80

A markedly steeper 1st year, but the rest pretty close.

I couldn't find the ZF S42 / S47 on your page. Have a link to that?

I'll answer my own question, at least as quoted by one source ...

Transmission gear ratios
ZF S542/S547
5-speed manual (Ford)

1st -- 5.72:1
2nd -- 2.94:1
3rd -- 1.61:1
4th -- 1.00:1
5th -- 0.76:1

Sounds like it would be perfect for my long 2.73 rear. Keep the fuel economy and still pull everything an F150's rated for. Gonna put this one on my wish list!
