Did you pull the spout before checking the timing?

I was gonna say the same thing, that should be the only thing that would make the timing "bounce" all over. Also, you you set the timing without disconnecting the spout, your timing might very well be retarded too far. when it was at 20, that would be because the ecm was advancing to that intentionally.

Well I got the cats cut off and a pipe welded back in its place. It still wouldn't run right, so the exhaust guy (friend of mine) moved the dist. enough to drive it home and he put the Map Sensor I purchased. Then the next day I had it towed to a shop, I told him to adjust the timing and a scan the computer cause it wasn't running right. So he called me and told me that it needed a intake gasket. Well I have been driving it a couple of days now and then the lockup converter isn't locking in. Then yesterday I was driving it and it died going going down the road, and it would crank then die. Then it wouldn't turn over fast like the battery was dead. So I had the battery checked they said it was good. BUT I put another battery in it and it ran fine. But I didn't drive it far until I parked it. Do you think it was the battery? Thanks for all the help, thnks alot. Jeff

battery would not cause it to die unless you had some other electrical problems. I had a dead battery for a month, I would just jump it, then drive it. Once it's running it doesn't really matter on these trucks.

Did the guy say what made him think it was an intake gasket?

Man, sounds like you should find another truck, seems like more of a hassle than its worth.

Well I went back to my truck today, I was going to drive it around with my cousin following me. Well I got there first so I cranked it up and let it run before he got there, well it was running fine, so he showed up and I started to leave and he told me it was pouring transmission fluid... So now I have another problem... I had the torque converter replaced earlier because it poured out fluid back in June.. I'm beginning to believe like JFlom77 I'm tired of putting money in it.. Ever since I paint the sucker it's been a problem since.

I dont think a few degrees of timing is going to account for the massive transmission fluid loss. sounds like hes got a lemon, unless a drivetrain swap is in order something tells me its gona be one thing after another.

It sounds to me like a whole lot of people are throwing parts at the truck without really narrowing down the symptoms and their true causes. I haven't heard a word yet about any diagnostic trouble codes, what the timing is set to, etc.

Yes the timing was set to factory specs. I have good mechanics they do the right thing. They also replaced the intake gasket. The transmission guy replaced the torque converter awhile because it needed it. But I talked to him Friday and I told him it wasn't locking in and he told me wait till this week and he would look at it, he said it won't hurt it to drive it. So something happened it. It only has 76,000 on it.. And I have had it for 2 yrs now. I fix the problem and 3 days something else tears up. I hope eventually I will get all the problems solved so I can finish the bed liner and touch ups on the paint. Thanks for all the help everyone. Jeff.

Silly question maybe, but did you unplug the spout connector before you set the timing? If tnot that computer will have been trying to compensate for the changes you were making.

Didn't some of the trucks have a pin in the dis. gear that would shear off and cause a problem like this? I ask this in the form of a question, but I know it to be true. As far as the trans leak? I don't see how anyone could answer that one without climbing under it. Sorry to hear about all the "luck" with the truck. Could try kicking it....
