Runs out of gas? I think...?
1995 psd, bone stock. 273K miles
I've been working on this for the past few months, alot of needed things i put off finally bit me in the butt.
Originally died on the highway, felt like it ran out of gas. I replaced the fuel pump as I heard it was pretty common and somewhat cheap.
Replaced both batteries, glow plugs and glow plug relay. Took forever to start, air in the fuel lines I guess.
Kept filling up the fuel bowl with fuel then finally it did start and ran smooth. Let it idle to get warm, but after about 10mins it just dies, like it ran out of gas.
Filled the bowl back up, crank, crank, crank, finally starts and runs good. I tried both tanks, does the same thing on both tanks.
The truck will run on the fuel thats in the bowl, but once its empty thats it and it dies. The fuel bowl will not stay full.
Since it does it on both tanks I assume I have an air leak or line leak from the tank switch up to the pump? Any advice, this has got me stumped!

There is a unit under the truck that selects the tanks.
It could be bad and stuck with both tanks closed.
I'm not sure how to check it, but that probably is your problem.
Sucks too, cause you already replaced the pump.
DOH!
Good work otherwise though. Most wouldn't' even think to fill up the fuel bowl.

Is there a way he could route a line around the selector valve? I don't know much about the selector valve, mine has aways worked but if his is bad then he will know if its the selector valve. Sorry I'm not talking directly to you higgy87 but I thought about doing this one time when I was having fuel problems. They were not related to the problems your having though.

I guess I'll try hooking a line up to the pump feed line and trying that. which hose is it?
Anyone know diagnosis for the selector valve? It works properly on the dash. Shows correct fuel amount for each tank, switches properly etc...
o-btw. not sure if its related or not but last summer i ran a tank of b100 through it. ran great, no issues until now. fyi.
thanks,
justin
