NP435-PTO(Power Take-Off)
There is a cover and gasket on the side of the
NP435 transmission named the Power Take-Off. This
gasket is leaking a bit and I was thinking of
replacing it. My only concern is that I read in
another place in my shop manual that this PTO
has it's own oil compartment. Does anyone know
if this compartment is filled through the normal
transmission filler plug and lubricant flows
into both the main and PTO compartments? Also
I was not able to find any torque specs for these
bolts and the filler plug, any suggestions?
Can anyone describe the PTO feature to me?
Thanks for your advice in advance.

The side cover once removed will expose an opening into the transmission. There is no seperate compartment rather removal of the cover exposes the gears which the Power Take-Off unit (PTO) would engage. Drain your oil then remove the cover or you may have a mess. The cover bolts are a 3/8" x 16 and its recommended that they are torqued 20-30 Ft. Lbs. The drain plug should be torqued like amount. The transmission requires 6.75 pints of 50WT ENGINE OIL. Yes that's what Ford specs call for "engine oil" use of gear oil will cause hard shifts.
Trying to explain a PTO unit is like trying to explain a spark plug. I hope you don't want me to go there. They are specific to their own applications and usually manufactured by subcontractors when items such as power-lifts, tow trucks and other equipment was fitted to the truck chassis.
