F1 Hydroboost Power Brake

More updates on my 48 F1 build. My frame was pretty beat up for being 62 years old and the PO had removed the original center crossmember. Steve at Industrial Chassis had installed one of his tubular center crossmembers when he put in the Dakota front crossmember for me. Since I'm going to run a diesel in the truck and therefore have no vacuum to run a power assist for the brakes, I decided to go with the hydroboost which uses the hydraulic pressure generated by the power steering pump to provide the power for the brake assist. With the diesel and its automatic transmission taking up a lot of space between the frame rails, the next option is on the outside of the frame rail. I had Industrial Chassis install the hydroboost brackets on my frame with the pedal in the original position. Here's the link to Steve's blog entry about the install.

1950 Ford F1 Hydro-Boost Brakes : Industrial Chassis Inc.

Next up, haul the frame and cab from Phoenix to Tucson so I get a chance to work on it. And then larger disk brakes for the Dakota front suspension with a 5 on 5.5 inch bolt circle.

I've had Steve do the frame work as his welding is a whole lot better than mine and I KNOW it will be safe.

Howdy Phil,

You're gonna have to refresh my memory a little here....

Which engine and trans are you going to use?

His plans with this build are to use a Ford Powerstroke 7.4L diesel engine and a reasonably heavy duty suspension.
Never mind......I found it!!! I'll read that as a 7.3L PS engine! Depending on the year.....you're using either an E4OD or a 4R100?

You're doing something that I am wanting to do also.

I'm planning a "big" automatic trans too! (if you're doing an AT540 or MT mine is probably not all that big!!)

I have an E4OD (from a 1994 F450 7.3L IDI) going on the back of my 292 and I want to do Hydroboosted brakes powered from a PS pump unit too.

I am a little worried about the fluid volume capacity of them though. I'm thinking that I'll need a fair amount of volume to actuate the dual-cyl brakes on the back of my F-600. and I have single cyl, single piston type on the front..... I am sure I'll need some sort of proportioning valve to keep from locking up the front or back etc.....

Do you have any other pictures?

(oh btw, I probably have asked before......what do you AV8 in?)

I don't have any other pictures of the hydroboost install. Steve took the ones in the blog post and the truck is still in his shop in Phoenix while I slave away at my job in Tucson.

I'm planning on the 4R100 or maybe an Allison depending on the budget and if I can get the trans with the engine.

Talk to Steve at Industrial Chassis, 602-278-6800. He can advise you on the brakes and fluid volume. You will definitely need a proportioning valve. Are you going to use disk brakes up front? I would, as most of the braking is done by the front brakes.

The AV8 does NOT refer to aviation and airplanes. Lord knows I love aircraft of all types especially AC-130 gunships. The AV8 refers to another hot rod project. When you put a Ford flathead in a Model A its called an "A-V8". A future project is a 29 Ford Roadster with a flathead.

Oh yeah. The hydroboost came from Classic Performance Parts in Anaheim, CA.

Aha!

Ok,

No, I'm just going to use the original wheels and drums etc. They actually work VERY well. I'd just like to go to a Hydraulically boosted dual res system.

That hydrobooster in your picture looks exactly like the one in my 94 K2500 diesel Suburban.

I think you'll be happy with the 4R100. they are a very strong transmission if built correctly.

Mine is basically an E4OD with guts from a diesel model inside a case for a SBF/I-300 since I couldn't buy an adapter for the 7.3l diesel bellhousing.

The internals are interchangeable between all the E4OD/4R100 models. (Actually I think I also have a planet gear set FROM a 4R100 in mine too!)

I'm sticking with the drum brakes since I am staying with the original 5 lug BUDD wheels. (9.00-20 tires.....40" dia!!)

I would have liked to use an Allison too but the 1000 series is a VERY expensive trans compared to the 4R100 (which is very available)

If you were going to use an AT-540/541, that would be a pretty heavy trans to put in an F1 along with a PS!! (you planning to tow a 26ft boat with an F1?)

Also, the AT540 doesn't have overdrive like the E4OD/4R100 (OD-0.71)

So you'd need a pretty tall rear axle to keep the RPMS down on the I-10 Freeway!!

I am using a 2 speed axle (high range is 5.83:1) I am expecting about 2100 RPM at 60 mph on the freeway.

Also, the all electronic 4R100/E4OD has a lock-up torque converter which I'll control with a Baumann Engr controller.

If you do not use the FOMOCO controller you'll need some sort of controller to control the trans. since the FOMOCO is not programmable, you might want to consider an aftermarket controller like the Baumann.
