Possibly buying an '02, need opinions on price (Pics inside)
Hey all, I have been looking for a newer SUV for the family and stumbled upon this Expedition (2002):
It's on a car lot and their asking price is $11,995
It has 84K miles and has the 5.4L Automatic.
Options:
• Air Conditioning
• Rear Air
• Power Steering
• Power Windows
• Power Door Locks
• Tilt Wheel
• Cruise Control
• Am/Fm Stereo
• Multi Compact Disc
• Premium Sound
• Dual Front Air Bags
• Abs (4-Wheel)
• Leather
• Power Seat
• Third Seat
• Roof Rack
• Privacy Glass
• Towing Pkg
• Xlt
• Premium Wheels
• Wide Tires
So I just want some advice, does this sound like a reasonable price? The tire size worries me a bit. As good as it looks, I'm afraid the mileage would be terrible. The sales guy said that they aren't that big (I guessed they were 36's). The side view makes me think maybe they could be 35's but on stock gearing, my mileage and acceleration could still suffer. Also, not so sure about the wife and kids getting up inside that thing. I have yet to see it in person, I hope to Monday when they are done going over it. I just wanted to be armed with some expert advice on the price. KBB looks to be around 10K, but obviousely the rims, tires, and lift drive the price up a bit. ANy pointers on what else to look for when I go see it?
Also, I am upgrading from my Broncos (I have a '93 and an '87) as a tow vehicle. I am only pulling around 3500K lbs which is well within its range, but the Broncos hurt going up hills. Any opinions on tow capabilities over mountains?
Any other opinions?
Thanks

I would keep looking if I was you, lifted trucks arent very family friendly, they look cool but ride like crap, and they are usually beat on if they have been off-roaded hard. If you do want a lifted vehicle buy one stock and lift it yourself or have it done, if you are looking for the off-road look. An Expy would be a great choice for your needs especially for towing. Find a nice E.B. for $6-8k depending on mileage and options. Keep shopping!

This just isn't right for a family vehicle. It looks like a fairly good climb to get into it and there aren't even any running boards to give you a step up. It has it's benefits as a boy toy, but I just can't see someone's wife trying to load groceries into it or strap a baby into a car seat. At least not without a stepladder kicking around.

Its a really nice truck but the price is pretty high. The truck looks clean and fairly maintained. The only thing that worries me is the truck is lifted. I always worry about this because you don't know who did it, it could be a good shop or some idiot in their back yard that installed it wrong. The gas mileage is bad no matter what way you look at it, but the tires will make it a little worse than stock. If you can get the price down I would say buy it as long as the suspension check out and they have some sort of maintenance record. Overall it looks like a nice truck.

The mileage will never be as good as you want it to be. Running boards are available used at the bone yards or Craigs list or eBay. Check out the lift and alignment at a shop that does rhem and then offer the dealer about $1000-1500 less than the least expensive similar stock Expedition you can find in your area, provided you really like the truck and can live with it the way it is.
Don't let the dealer work you, you are the buyer and he wants your money. You work the dealer. For the amount they want you could buy a loaded Navigator. Remember the dealers do not pay extra for any mods on trade ins, they deduct from the value because of them and I'm talking about any mods that are not factory available.
If they won't meet your price take your money and go elsewhere. The big SUVs are not the hot items they were 2 or 3 years ago, no matter what they say.
