What is your fuel filter of choice? NAPA? Carquest?

What is the popular fuel filter here for 7.3s? Immediately after buying my truck used I bought a Carquest 86518 filter, these are the separate element that fits beneath the fuel filter cap...see pic below:

However, I was never able to install it without it leaking massively around the cap. I have followed the instruction regarding the direction to seat the beveled gasket and still end up spewing diesel. I've since switched to the NAPA one piece cap and filter, with no leakage problem.

I tried installing the Carquest filter again this evening after doing some work on the rig. Spewed again. Is there a trick to these?

What are other people using? Thanks.

Looks like a Racor/Motorcraft. That's what I'm running. On my third one with no leaks.

Racor, exactly the same drop in filter element you have there. Dip the gasket in diesel and with the pointed beveled part up, turn the cap slowly then torque down slowly. Is the fuel bowl alright, not cracked anywhere?

Thanks for the replies

It is most curious- okay I have not tried dipping the gasket prior to installing...I'll try that the next time I give this a whirl.

Racors would be my brand of choice if I could get them...they are all that I've used in marine diesels. Thanks for the feedback gents.

That just might be your problem, its getting binded up, no sliding with the rotation of the cap, good luck. You can find them on E-Bay, got a couple a while back last year.

For the filters wtih a beveled gasket, coat the gasket in diesel fuel. If your filter comes with a flat gasket, use a light coat of motor oil on the gasket.

I use Racor in mine.

Racor/Motorcraft for me also. Make sure your putting the beveld seal up and tighten down tight. The first one I ever changed on mine was doing what yours did. I had to tighten it tight to make sure the filter seated down right in the bowl. Take a few cranks before it tight. I use 2 flat screw drivers and cross them. After that one time of learning to put it in, I never had a problem since. No more leaks.

Racor here. What others have said, lube both the gasket/o'ring in diesel fuel. Make sure the old o'ring hasn't come off the filter and is laying at the bottom of the fuel bowl.

Finally, be careful not to over tighten the lid.

Racor also, never an issue. The first time I changed the fuel filter myself, I was a little concerned I would place the lid gasket on wrong. I understand the older Ford Trucks with the diesel had a spin on fuel filter. That sounds pretty easy.
