Dont know on an 09. My 02 it is under vehicle just infront of the fuel tank alsmost directly under the passenger rear floorboard. Very easy to get to. Call your Ford dealer they will tell you where its at.
02 V6 it is under the hood, in the back of the engine compartment. Looks like little bitty oil filter. One of those stupid plastic clips are involved. Supposed to be somewhat careful about pressure before removing. I just let it sit for a few hours and the slowly cracked fittings.

Really? My 02 is under the rear seat (underneath) and I checked the area you said do not have anything there. Mine is a V6

I replaced one on my '02 - (larger V6, I service too many to remember the size of one that needs little to no attention) about 80k ago according to the records and am going to bulk replace it again when the weather breaks. It is a spare vehicle now and the wife uses it instead of her new Mustang during the bad weather. She has been complaining it "cranks to long" while starting in the cold temperatures. If I recall correctly, it was mounted on the inside of the frame about mid car, driver's side. It looks just like triskadek said. Locate the fuel lines and just follow them, you'll easily find it or like the newer models, you do not have an external one that can be serviced.
Question: What are your symptoms that cause you to feel it needs replacing?
I've had recent posts on a separate thread that indicates there is no fuel filter on the 2009 model. Check out that thread. It's titled 'Can anyone confirm no filter on Ford Hybrid..."
Thanks for your post. I've had no problems, I just wanted to be prepared.
