Haynes diesel manual worth getting?

Hi all.

As a newcomer, I have not found a good thread that discusses the best shop manual(s) to get for my 89 F-Superduty flatbed dually with the 7.3 IDI. I just bought the Chilton 1987-96 Repair Manual and it is too general. I have on order two from Helm that hopefully will be more specific.

Should I also buy the Haynes Diesel Repair one?

Thanks all

I got the Haynes Manual, loaned it to a friend and he rebuilt his entire 6.9l engine with it. It may not be the greatest as it also covers other Diesels but not bad for the money and what you get I have found.

You can find the rest on this Forum, no problem.

Haynes manual for diesel covers 5.7, 6.2, 6.5, 6.9, 7.3 IDI and 7.3 Power Stroke engines and related systems ONLY, not the chassis, drivetrain, etc. Manual P/N 10330.

Get the Ford Pick-up & Bronco manual for the "rest of the story". Covers 2WD and 4WD, 1980 - 1996, F-100 thru F-350. P/N 36058

I have no issues with them. They're at least good enough to help you get things apart, anyway ;-)

diagnostics manuals good also?

As I was searching ebay, I ran across a site selling the diagnostics part of a 1992 Ford service manual. The description of it seemed really great. I wonder if i could just get the whole manual for that year (1992) and the info on the 7.3 would apply to my 1989.

There are others on ebay selling "authorized Ford" reprints of diesel "supplements" and wonder if any of you have these and are they worth it?

I did order from Helm some 1989 year-specific manuals and hope they are not just poor quality photocopies!

I have a brother-in-law that that is a diesel mechanic, when I got my truck and called him for some advice he recommended the Haynes manual. Said it's the best book you can get for idi's, so far I would have to agree with him.

Helm's did the dealer manuals, so if you can get them they are by far the best.
They are also the most expensive.

Haynes has torque values and sequences, fluid quantities and types and a lot of good information.

It also has some bad information, like the IP removal proceedure is dead wrong and will wind up with the timing gears unmeshed, and probably out of time without extra work.

Any book is better than no book.

Any book with FTE, as good as any thing you can buy.

Wow, perfect timing for this thread. I was thinking about buying this book from work as well.

Dave I looked around trying to find this Helms manual you speak of... no luck. Any chance you got a part number for that manual, might make it easier to find online if you do.

They are on Ebay from time to time.

I have seen both the CD versions and the paper versions, but the price is usually 100 or more.

Helms is the company that published the original Ford factory manuals, as well as some other OEM manuals. If they have them in stock, you can buy them new here Service Manuals, Owner Manuals, Wiring Diagrams, Service Bulletins - Helm Incorporated

ebay or Helm?

After doing some searching on ebay and Helm, some vendors on ebay claim to have "Ford authorized" reprints.

Question I now have is which of the many do I get for my late 1989 model. I am tempted to get the 1990 manual set, but they apparently do not contain the diesel "supplement" that I would need.

To further complicate the decision, there apparently is a 1992 Ford manual that has detailed "diagnostics" that I would assume (???) would cover my model year.

It is getting more complicated that I originally thought, but I want the most detailed info I can get.

Comments??
