Replacing Power Steering Fluid Reservoir

My power steering reservoir was leaking, I thought from the return hose. I went to replace that and the hose barb on the fiberglass reservoir went "snick." I now suspect that was where it was leaking.

My Haynes manual does not address replacing JUST the reservoir. Best I can figure is that I remove the bolt form the Pressure side, which appears to be the only thing holding the reservoir on the pump, and pull the broken reservoir off. Putting the new reservoir is simply sliding it on the pump (remembering to place o-rings where appropriate), and putting Pressure side bolt back in to hold it in place.

Am I in for any surprises once I start this project, or is it pretty strait forward?

Sounds like a good time to do the Saginaw power steering conversion. It's a bolt-in swap that eliminates that noisy Ford PS pump.

Me too. I would tell anyone who owns a Ford truck with a noisy PS pump to replace it with the Saginaw unit.

Is that something that I can get from the local parts suppliers (advance, checker, etc)?

thanks, being at work I really have to watch how much time I spend searching, I didn't find anything right away and had to stop looking...

Thanks for the link. Reading through it. I wish I had held off ordering a replacement reservoir for the stock pump now.

Okay, so that was interesting. The reservoir I ordered from Advance was just a touch to small and cracked when I put it on. I took it back and just bought an OEM pump. At this point it was worth the extra $30 to get the truck up and running. The pump went on easy, everything looks good. Thanks again for the responses on this.

Now, Someone mentioned it another post, and I will confirm the tool rental policy at autozone is awesome. I went and put a $30 deposit on the pulley remover tool, came home, changed the pump, returned the tool and got my deposit back. Awesome policy.
