Upgrades Speakers

I just finished installing some Infinity 6820cs components($99) in the front doors and man, do they sound good. The detail and clarity is so much better than the stock 'components'. You can hear things in songs that were not there before. Bass is nice too. A bit punchier. Took about an hour per side, but I took my time. Plenty loud too without an amp-although the stock speakers are extremely sensitive. I mounted the crossover on the power window motor under the sound proofing mat. Just thought I would share this.

Here is the tweeter. I was thinking of taking it back out, and spraying the gray plastic and black wire mesh-if I can remove it-with a matching interior color plastic paint.

I think the tweeter looks fine, interior paint just doesnt last that long and will flake in a few years.

Great install indeed, do you have any pics of the install? A how to if you will.

I don't but I will take some this weekend.

Now that I look at it more, I kind of like the silver, matches the dash paint.

My stock speakers are really poor. So did you have a technician do it? Do you know what size those are?

Did you rewire the speakers or just use an adapter harness? Looks good. Are you going to replace the rest of them as well?

Where did you get the speakers? Did it come with instructions? My last purchase from Crutchfield they had no instructions for 08 Expedition.

Crutchfiled supplied the Ford harness which looks like this

You unplug the OEM speaker and connect the supplied adapter to the OEM harness then I clipped the ends off and ran that in to the crossovers input. The speakers came with wires for the woofer and tweeter. I kept all the stock stuff so I could put it all back if I sell the truck or whatever.

I have thought about putting a coaxial in the rear locations, but am waiting to find a deal. I will stick with Infinity Reference as they are pretty efficient and I love the tweeter, not harsh very detailed.

There were instructions from Crutchfield but not on how to mount the tweeter. It basically shows how to take the door panel off, which is very easy.

Here is a picture of the crossover mounted on the power window motor. I took the top off the crossover so it wouldn't protrude. It might have fit with it on.

Here are the rear speakers installed. I went with some JL 5x7's I had forgot I had. They sound very nice, but not quite as forward in the treble department as the Infinitys. Much better than stock. I was surprised to see Ford use a tweeter in their rear door speakers. I have owned 6 Fords and none of them except the Audiophile speakers in some of the Eddie Bauers had them.

So those have a tweeter up there originally? Are the door speakers 6x8s?

The rear door speakers are 6x8 as are the fronts. The OEM rear's are a coaxial with a clear plastic type tweeter built into the grill. I will snap a picture later. I have not seen Ford use this type. Usually it's a paper cone 'tweeter' on top of the woofers voice coil dust cap.
