1994 F150 5.8L EGR code?

My brothers truck is a 1994 F150 4x4 extended cab Centurian package with the 5.8L engine. He has had a "Check Engine" light that won't go away. He recently purchased a scan tool and it came up with an EGR valve code. Truck runs fine with no obvious issues except the annoying light.

Any suggestions to fix, replace, or try? Maybe i can get him to register and chime in.

My truck has an EGR valve code too...but we really can't help unless we know the exact code number.

Thats EGR valve opening not detected...So, the EGR is not opening...at all. Could be closed shut with carbon and crud. You are going to need to take off the egr and clean it, you could try soaking it in some gasoline overnight and then letting it dry before reinstalling it. Inspect it to see if its corroded inside and try pushing on the underside of the EGR (the part that goes up and down), theres a shaft there thats attached to the valve and is held closed by a spring. If its not moving easily or at all still. Just replace it, they are about 100-150 bucks at an autoparts store. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but if the EVR was to blame, wouldn't he be getting another code, like voltage out of range ? So I'm thinking just the EGR. If its not the EGR, its prob the EVR, you can test that by putting vacuum to the EGR, you unplug the one vacuum line going to the EGR and you apply some vacuum. If it stumbles and idles badly, your EGR is opening and you prob have an EVR issue.

If the EVR was bad no vacuum would be applied to the EGR at the proper time. Same thing can happen if the vacuum hose leading to the EGR was disconnected or venting to the atmosphere. The EVP is the sensor sitting on top of the EGR valve. That is what sends the EGR position signal to the PCM.

Kudos !

Thanks for the advise I"ll certainly give it a go ! Started off replacing the position sensor (a cheap $30 part) but still getting the code. I'll move to step 2 removing the valve & giving it a good soaking, I"m guessing the next step if thats unsuccessful is to start tracing the vacume lines ? right now the truck is buried in a foot of snow from the snow storm we"re having here in Va Beach so im in a holding pattern for now. Thank you for your awsome feedback Kudo's to all of you !
