Big deal or not? Rear diff seal leak

My truck is at the dealer now. I noticed oil all over my drive and noticed that the rear differential is leaking where the drive shaft comes in. The fluid looks like its been slung around under there. Is this a quick fix? I have no idea how long its been leaking. What damage could result? My truck has 52,000 miles on it, so this should be under the pwr train warranty shouldn't it?

Do you do alot of heaving towing? It is probably you rear pinion seal leaking. Unfortunatly, i do not believe it will fall under the powertrain warranty. If I understand correctly powertrain is from motor to trans and stops there. The rear diff and related parts fall under normal matinence, but you never know dealers can get creative to help you get covered.

Actually it's the motor only covered by the 5 yr/ 100,000 warranty.

He's talking about the 5/60,000 powertrain warranty:

should be covered, yes it can be a big deal if you have lost quite a bit of fluid, but I bet not.

Pinion seal is most likely the cause. On that note I had one go bad, twice. Only got fixed when I insisted that the yoke is the cause.

Yoke had a groove worn into it and was leaking.

Not on my current truck but my 06 did this.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the responses. When the first service dept person called me they said the truck was ready and it was $218. After reading the last couple of posts, I called back and mentioned that it should be under warranty. Five minutes on hold later, the young lady came back and told me that, yes, it was covered under warrany.

thanks again y'all.

Sorry for the mis-info. I thought only the 06 got that extended power train warranty.

Glad you got it fixed under warranty! Good info is why I keep coming back to FTE!

69cj, if I remember right the 5/60 started in '06 and has been there ever since. I remember because both my '07 and '08 trucks have it.
