Overheating at Idle

I have a problem with my 72 F100 360 overheating when at an idle. Ive tried running without a thermostat and with one. I just recently flushed the cooling system it has a flex fan and a factory fan schroud. when it idles for any amount of time it gets up over 230deg and when I give it a little gas the temp dropps. Any help would be appreciated.

double check your radiator juice, it might be that simple, if not, you might be changeing your water pump. Do you have hot air coming out of the heater at idle, and do you have cooler air when then motor temp dropps when driving? It has happened to me at times, it was low on coolant.

Check first as to whether you have much rust in the cooling system. The water jackets at the base of the cylinders build up lots of rusty sludge and can cause a problem like you have. If rust is present, knock out the freeze plugs and flush our as much as you can. then you have to use something to dig out the hard stuff at the bottom of the water jackets. Replace the freeze plugs and flush the cooling system with the two part rust remover. Use distilled or rain water to refill and put a coolant recovery system in to prevent futher clogs.

Hope this is of some help.
