FE stands for "Ford/Edsal" This was the car line these engines were first installed in.

I heard this cool legend when I was a kid that the FE was named after the chemical symbol for iron (Fe). They called it the FE because there had never been so much iron used in the construction of a single engine prior to the original FE. Just thought i'd share that with ya.

390, that's a good start. Edsel was one of Henery Fords sons. He worked on the new project introduced in 1958, and had the engine line and the car named for him.

FE = Ford Edsel

Didn't any of you learn anything from high school history?

B.C. >>> Before Chevrolet

A.D. >>> After Dodge

F.E. >>> Ford Era (Refers to the timeline of 1958-1976 when Ford knew how to build bulletproof engines)

I believe there was also some foreign timelines but since this was U.S. History, we were never tested on them.

i think what makes a motor better than others is that persons opinion,or memories of that 390 in that f100 they had years ago.i have owned several FE's but their so damm heavy!!,no offense but a 351w w\ a mild cam ,600 4bbl,good daul-plane hi-rise,elec.igntion will eat a 390's lunch!and weigh's alot less and looks kinda' cute sittin' in there.but i do have high respect for 'em ,needless to say,i am done with 'em. that leaves more for you all!,i geuss. oleblue=

For anyone who really wants to know what "FE"
stands for it's "Ford Engine" not Ford Edsel or whatever else was posted.

Hoss, sorry to tell you this but you're dead wrong. Its Ford-Edsel. It was originally developed as a 330 ci V8 for the Edsel in 1957. Production officially ended in 1976 though it was still made for some industrial (U-haul trucks) and marine applications into the early 80s.
